The Role
At the beginning of my internship (first six months) I highly enjoyed my internship as I was given the opportunity to effectively run my own business. However I was given very little support in comparison to permanent members of staff and therefore my results were not what management were expecting. As a result I was moved to a more administrative role which I still enjoyed due to the culture of the organisation however this was not the job I original accepted or expected to be doing.
I felt highly valued by my colleagues. By the end of my internship I worked in three different departments, working closely with four people in particular which I received excellent feedback and support from. However the support and feedback I got from management was minimal and therefore I do not feel I was able to reach my potential.
At Hays every colleague has to do a monthly sales plan with their manager and other interns on my floor were required to do this. However after my 12 week review I did not have an official sit down with my manager, other than being told I was moving team. The support I received from other members of staff was fantastic and I feel like they were let down by the management.
I went through a short period where I was not particularly busy at all however I did feel comfortable doing nothing and confronted my director in order to get a long term plan in place to ensure I was always working.
At the beginning I was given a lot of responsibility, which is one of the things that drew me to Hays. However being an intern and getting very little support meant I was not able to handle this responsibility to the best of my ability.
The skills and training I have developed and received during my placement will particularly help me within my degree studies because it has given me a real insight into how an organisation runs. In addition I have developed skills such as using data systems, communication and building relationships and strong organisation skills.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office at Hays is incredibly hard working but also very fun. Due to the nature of the job everyone is extremely chatty and sociable. But also everyone is self motivated and therefore creating a hard working atmosphere.
On the overall I feel Hays's internship is highly organised because when speaking to other interns they have had an incredibly structure and overall good internship. However I feel like mine was the exception. By the end of my placement I had worked in three different teams, picking up several different roles.
Initially they invested a lot but eventually the foot was taken off the pedal. I highly enjoyed working at Hays but I feel I was not able to reach my full potential or show this to Hays.
I am highly interested in going back to Hays to work within the Education department as this is where I feel I fit in most and I would thrive as a Recruitment Consultant. During my placement at Hays I have known three previous interns to come back and work at Hays.
The Culture
Yes a very good social scene within the office and outside of the office. Due to the nature of the job all the colleagues are very sociable and chatty.
I lived and worked in Manchester and commuted from Fallowfield. My cost of living did not change from when I was a student.
The nightlife was excellent and getting to know different people meant I found new places to go out.
