The Role
Interesting and engaging with a strong support base and freedom to explore various teams across the investment banking division.
Colleagues gave me responsibility early on and allowed me to run with projects with minimal supervision. When supervision was required support was available and the environment was very inclusive with interns actively encouraged to reach out for advice across the bank.
The internship was well structured with formalised meetings with development officers and mentors. There was also significant informal support through colleagues and management who by and large had an open door policy where interns were encouraged to ask for advice and meet more people.
The first two weeks of any placement are usually not too busy, but once I had settled in I received numerous projects to work on as well as having internship events.
I was given a significant amount of responsibility during my placement - taking on several projects at once with the responsibility of having to manage both my own time as well as managing expectations from different teams.
Perhaps not really applicable as the skills I have gained are unlikely to assist in my studies further as I have finished my MBA and the internship was the final component of those studies. However, beyond studies the skills I gained continue to build my professional skills in the working world and will be invaluable for full-time placement.
The Company
Atmosphere was generally positive with the majority focused on including interns and promoting collaboration across the organisation.
The internship was well structured with a mix of events, training and practical experience.
The entire first week was set aside for training, include getting up to speed with various bank systems as well as ensuring a base level of competency across both technical and soft skills.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. There is a well structured system in place with a clear path to promotion.
The Culture
Interns made an effort to hang out outside of work and there was generally a good social scene.
Cost of living and socialising is definitely expensive. However, many of the events were covered for by the bank and the salary for the internship was generous in order to be able to cover these costs.
Office location is in the City of London so as far as that goes the nightlife was great!
There were definitely several opportunities to get involved outside of work through sporting events, etc. but given the nature of the industry with longer working hours this did limit potential involvement.
