The Role
I went in worrying that I would miss out on a whole summer of fun and enjoyment, but what I experienced was more fantastic than anything I could have achieved of my own accord.
Living and working with your colleagues is something you probably wouldn't want to do for a prolonged period, but for the 3 months it was great. 'Like Family' is a good description.
The management was superb. The team mentors were dedicated to our overall and individual success, and the programme manager supported and encouraged all manner of activities that drove our projects to success.
We had the freedom to dictate our own daily workload, which is a great thing when you have an interesting and worthwhile project to work on. When you're involved in something like that, it's difficult not to love spending time on it.
Teams of 4 are great. Just enough people to keep you from feeling overwhelmed, but not so many that you can't directly influence the direction.
I wouldn't know how to begin to quantify the overall impact the internship has had on my life. Without question a positive impact.
The Company
16 young professionals in an open plan office... it was perfect for the job.
IBM have clearly spent a lot of time thinking about Extreme Blue. I can't fault it.
Everybody in IBM knows about Extreme Blue, and that's a LOT of people. It's something the company is clearly very proud of. The kinds of employees we were able to speak to on a daily basis made this clear!
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
International Travel
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Working from home
Interning at a company that is rapidly continuously growing certainly helps your employment prospects ;-)
The Culture
Paid-for accommodation in effect makes everything very cheap.
As in most areas, it's all about knowing the right places. Although if you're with the right people I think a good night is guaranteed!
