Business Tax Intern Review

The internship was enjoyable for two mains reasons. Firstly, it was a good insight into the work conducted within the department which allowed me to learn a lot. Secondly, the environment of the office was very welcoming meaning we (the interns) could quickly integrate.

As our work was mainly on client cases we found that whatever we did was contributing to the department. This meant that we felt valued as everything always led to being thanked by the others in the office. Essentially, we were treated liked trainees.

We received a large amount of support by management but this did not happen on a day to day basis. Rather we would have regular meetings or weekly catch ups with them. Instead, the people around us often provided the most support and guidance.

We often found that there was a lack of work in the department. It was clear that there was a concerted effort to give us work but often this failed. The explanation given to us was that it wasn't the busy season for them and with 3 interns and 2 work experience students it meant that we were often a bit bored.

We were often given client work that was very important to the grand scheme of things. As mentioned previously, we were treated like trainees meaning that regardless of the size of the company we were given meaningful work toward it.

During my time here I have learnt a lot of skill that will transfer to later life. The main improvement has to be in my financial literacy. Having been given the time and effort of many seniors at the company I am now able to understand the financial aspects of a company in better depth.

The atmosphere in the office was really good. No one was ever stressed or flippant toward you. I found that people were happy to have a chat whenever I would go over. They were also genuinely interested in finding out more about me and what I wanted to get out of the experience.

We spent the first two days being trained and inducted like a normal trainee would. That training was very useful in understanding the basics of what we were doing but the most valuable training we received was on a day to day basis while working. For example, if we were struggling with the software or understanding a legislation, someone would spend as much time as needed breaking it down and going through it step by step.

Yes, the department was very good at organising social events and brining along to them. Throughout our six week placement we had welcome drinks, an intern social and leaving drinks which were all paid for by the company. There were also other informal events that people in the office invited us along to.

As we are working in central London, the cost of socialising is quite high. It would cost around £5 for a pint of beer and maybe £6-7 on a hot lunch. However, we often found that the other trainees or more senior people would offer to pay for us if we went out after work.
