The Role
I very much enjoyed working at Bank of America Merrill Lynch on the summer internship. The work was interesting and the pooled nature of the internship meant I could work with lots of teams. There was also a good week of training at the beginning which helped us with the basics of accounting.
Everyone at the bank was very supportive and I enjoyed working with a range of people. I mainly worked with analysts and associates and attended several meetings with more senior bankers and the environment was very welcoming. People were very willing to help me out and teach me and I felt very valued.
I had a large number of ports of call at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, consisting of a buddy (senior analyst), staffer (associate), development officer (director) and mentor (managing director). These people were also all in different teams so I had a large supportive network throughout the bank which was very helpful.
The pooling system meant that I could get work from a number of different teams so on the whole I had a good level of work on a daily basis. If not, I was able to contact my staffer who was able to speak to more teams to get me more staffings, so any under-staffing didn't last long. I rarely had days where I was too busy.
I was given a good level of responsibility - I was given work to do which I completed and then it would be checked by the person who had given me the work. This was good because as an intern I did not necessarily know everything and I was able to learn from my mistakes so that I could improve for the next time.
The training was useful in that we learnt the basics of accounting and this came in handy when pulling numbers from annual reports. The factset training was also useful as it meant that when I had to pull numbers from factset I could remember how to input the correct formulas.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly. I sat in the office in a row full of interns and some interns were integrated into the teams. Working with a range of teams meant that I was frequently walking around the office so I could experience the culture of other teams and the atmosphere was good in all teams
The overall internship was very well organized. There was a good balance of working and training and networking events, plus a charity project which lasted for approximately six weeks, starting from the second week of the internship. This was a good way to meet interns from other teams and divisions.
I feel that Bank of America Merrill Lynch invested a lot of time and effort in my progress at the firm and I felt a very valued part of the organization. People took the time to talk me through the tasks that I had been set and also taught me about the broader overview of the projects that I was working on.

The future employment prospects with the organization are very good and many people who get offers at the firm enjoy working there and stay on. I feel that the internship has very well prepared me for the job and I have had an accurate representation of what I would be doing on a day to day basis.

There was very good nightlife. I went out for several team drinks and we went to various places near the office, usually within ten minutes walk and they were all easy to get to. This was a good way of meeting people. A couple of times we went out after drinks and again the nightlife in the area was very good
There was a touch rugby league which interns were invited to sign up for, where there was training for just the interns with the aim to have a touch rugby league across all the other teams already established in the bank. This was the main activity which I didn't attend because I had little time, however it was a good idea
