The Role
This internship was a really enjoyable and worthwhile experience. It offers a wide variety of learning opportunities and is extremely well-structured which allows you to quickly integrate yourself into the workplace and get the most out of your time there. I spent the majority of my time with one team within HR which allowed me to get a good understanding of that area of the department, however I was offered many opportunities to work with other teams for short periods of time if I wanted an insight into those business areas. I would definitely recommend this internship to others.
Colleagues were very happy to get me involved with their projects and gave me valuable work to do. The work that I was able to do and any input I had during meetings and collaborative work was always taken seriously which was very encouraging.
Excellent level of support - Guidance was initially given and all questions I had were very welcomed, however after this I was always given the opportunity to carry out work alone and then receive feedback which I found to be a very effective way of learning. Regular feedback is given and I received a mid-internship review which gave me points to improve upon during the second half of my time at M&G.
Generally I received a good level of work that was manageable and interesting. This did vary during the internship, however I found that as long as you were proactive about asking for work people were more than happy to involve you on projects and give you tasks.
I was given work that I felt could add value to the company and was given the opportunity to attempt it independently first. I was responsible for my own tasks and projects, and was able to organise my own time and meetings.
I feel the workplace skills I have gained at M&G will prove to be extremely valuable later in life. Not only do I feel I have developed a good understanding of my business area, but the insight sessions provided for all interns have taught me so much about the industry as a whole. In addition, I believe this internship has allowed me to develop my presentation skills, time-management and my ability to work collaboratively with my colleagues. This internship has really taught me how to take initiative, a skill which I think will be particularly useful in my studies, my career and beyond.
The Company
The atmosphere in the department was always very positive. Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly which allowed me to feel settled in the office really quickly. M&G as a whole has an emphasis on maintaining a good work-life balance and I think that creates a relaxed environment whilst ensuring everyone is being productive. I thought this was particularly evident in my department, people were clearly hard-working yet always made time to catch-up with me and answer any questions I had about work or the company. Human Resources at M&G has a really upbeat atmosphere that makes the internship experience extremely positive.
The scheme is very well-structured. The team organised insight sessions into various areas of the business at the start of the internship which introduced you to the organisation really effectively. There were many social events that were organised for the interns which allowed us to get to know each other quickly. My manager also had a clear idea about what she would like me to have achieved over the course of the scheme and was very helpful toward ensuring I made the most of my time at M&G. I was introduced to everyone in the department and was immediately given the opportunity to join a number of projects that my manager had already listed for me.
Considering the short amount of time we had at the company, I think there was a good level of investment in the interns. We all received insight sessions into the business departments at M&G and were given the opportunity to attend a number of events and training sessions that the company was running for their employees. My department in particular I felt invested a lot of time in me. People were always more than happy to meet with me personally to discuss their area of business.
Company Parties/Events
I would be very happy to work for M&G in the future. My time here has showed me that they are very appealing as an employer.
The Culture
All interns were really fun and friendly, we were able to organise our own social events on top of the HR organised socials. People in my department were also really approachable and social.
London is generally an expensive place to live.
Plenty of bars and restaurants however they are relatively expensive.
Almost weekly socials held by HR, these were also really varied - sport activities, drinks and meals. Plenty of opportunity to organise events with other interns.
