The Role
I have really enjoyed having an insight into what it would be like to work for Barclays. I especially liked having the opportunity to work within one department and fit into a team to work on ongoing projects, but also being able to explore other areas of the business through the meet the D/MD initiative and the talks from head of departments set up by the graduate resourcing team.
I felt very valued by my colleagues, especially my immediate team who made the effort to get to know me, give me important work and assist me when needed.
My line manager has been very supportive but equally have given me the independence to go to them and set up meetings when I feel I need help with a task.
Surprisingly I have been quite busy! This was a good surprise as I didn't think I would get the opportunity to work on so many important tasks with lots of different people.
I have been given a lot of responsibility during my internship with my team allowing me to take on large, interesting tasks from start to finish, only checking in with me when I feel I need help with something.
I have developed my data analysis and excel skills which will be highly useful in my degree- especially for my dissertation! I have developed team working skills which will be useful at university but also in the future for working in teams in any future jobs. I have developed my presentation skills which will be highly useful for my degree and also going forward in future jobs. Before working here, I was terrified of presentations but I have massively built my confidence after giving a presentation and receiving good feedback!
The Company
My office was extremely relaxed and friendly, which is something I didn't expect when coming to work in a big, successful bank! Everyone was more than happy to sit and talk to me about their job and I have learned a lot from a lot of different people which will be valuable for the future.
It was well organised overall. However, my only feedback would be to provide interns with a general help-sheet when starting which can give us general support for simple tasks such as printing, booking meeting rooms so we do not have to bother our line managers too much.
My team in particular were great at helping me achieve everything I wanted to get out the internship from day 1. However it would be great if HR could hold more skill developing workshops such as excel, public speaking so that we could specifically further develop some key skills throughout our internship if we didn't get the chance to in our day job.

Very appealing. I would be very keen to join the graduate scheme next year and carry out rotations in different teams to learn even more about the business and get an insight into different departments instead of just one. I feel like Barclays has a lot to offer and really cares about interns and graduates and this attracts me to work here in the future.
The Culture
Yes- in particular I was put on a group project with other interns and we got on very well and I believe will stay friends in the future. My only feedback would be that perhaps the resourcing team could set up more drinks events for interns to socialise as I only got to meet a small number of interns at the networking drinks in the first week.
Canary Wharf is an expensive area!! But there are some affordable lunch and drinks spots as well as the more pricey ones for special occasions! I didn't live locally so I'm not sure about the cost of living.
There are some really nice bars and restaurants with great menus. There are also great transport links so a trip to the city in only a simple DLR ride away if you require more choice!
To some extent- yes. The citizenship challenge was a great way to solve problems for some very interesting charities but I would have liked more volunteering opportunities. The societies were not brought to my attention until about half way through my internship but they hold a lot of interesting events. My department had a sports day followed by drinks which was a really fun day and a great way to interact with colleagues outside of the office.
