The Role
I have really enjoyed my time with Barclays. I have met so many lovely people ranging from interns to Directors and Managing Directors. I have also learnt a great deal about myself, Barclays and the Financial services sector as a whole.
I felt really valued at Barclays, especially on my team as I played a very integral part in the team and was responsible for parts of very high priority projects happening in the Corporate bank.
My manager sat literally behind me and so did the rest of my team. They were always there to answer any questions I had and supported me through the steep learning curve I embarked on during my time here.
I was extremely busy! Its very relative as some interns had less work and others had double. It really just depends on your team and the workload available to you but it also depends on you too, PROACTIVENESS is KEY!
I had a lot of responsibility as mentioned earlier, with the very high priority projects I got to work on and take full ownership of.
I can honestly say my excel skills before joining were really really lacking, but now I feel like a pro in excel! I have also learnt great time-management skills, embodied the Barclays values which will stick with me moving forward and also an all round understanding of the banking world which will be very applicable/useful to me as I embark on my MSc in Accounting & Finance at LSE this September!
The Company
My floor had its quiet moments but most of the time there was a good rapport between people working on the floor and it really showed how much these people enjoy their jobs, and enjoy working with their colleagues as at the end of the day the people you work with really play a huge part in your job satisfaction and performance.
We had a 2 day initial training program which was really enjoyable, but after that we had loads of talks from Directors across the different parts of the bank and a citizenship day which was amazing and some networking opportunities.
There is a ton of useful mandatory training to get through and ongoing support from your LM, Teammates and HR but nothing that went the extra mile in terms of development such as skills workshops etc
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
I'm hoping to get the grad scheme but I hope to move into DCM in IB after gaining some exposure to it from working in Corporate.
The Culture
The interns were amazing and we occasionally went out for drinks on Fridays.
Living in London is expensive as one would expect. The canteen here is subsidized which is great, travel on the other hand is quite expensive.
Friday evening in Canary Wharf is lit!
Depends on the individual and how well you manage your time
