The Role
great internship with an amazing cohort, providing the ability to excel in various paths and develop skills that you did not expect. The atmosphere was always lively and support always at the ready from both your team and HR.
Continuous appreciation from colleagues about your work and life in general. Small talks between work to see how you are getting along and effectively teaching you about the work whenever needed. it showed that they cared about you being there and did not just make you sit and do admin or filing.
Regarding supervisor, not a lot of guidance because of his position-which kept him very busy at all times. However, he delegated two VPs to 'look after' me, and thus from them i received continuous support and guidance on what to do and how to go about doing the task, they also introduced me to people in other teams allowing me to network with the wider business.
Always had work going on, and if the work was finished there was always something from that task that could be looked over and improved. Once the task was over went over it with my VP who then provided more advice and so I could edit my work and make it more effective. Again, there was always more than one task ongoing so work was never of shortage.
There was a fair amount of responsibility, as the work I did got sent over and presented to the wider business. On my first day a study report was released by the FCA and the Managing Director needed a summary of the 120 page document so i was tasked to do this by the next morning. thus the responsibility was there but never to the extent that it was overwhelming.
Have not been back to uni yet but i am sure the skills will assist me, in particular the use of excel and in general just the ability to read and research a lot more,
The Company
Work hard play hard environment. Everyone works to their ability but is also relaxed at the same time, no one is shy from answering a question or from going for a coffee. This makes it quite nice because you can just go up to someone and have a chat with them without worrying if they will be annoyed (of course there are exceptions-if you see someone with earphones on or their head in work you don't usually go disturb them)
all my technical logins etc worked right away, i was given a laptop and everything was set-up. however i do wish the option of a desktop was given over a laptop as it seems a lot more practical to work on a 20inch screen for excel rather than 11. Despite that, everything was well organised with events and social evenings happen now and then,
A lot of information and training was given for the team I was in, Personally, I wish more training was given in general on technical softwares and how they work (even if they were not relevant for the team you are in). I feel it is a good thing to know as you can speak about it in interviews saying that you understand the program and how it operates to a basic level.
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing as i did my spring week here as well. The chance to grow through the bank is great and with all re structural reforms going on it seems like a great time to enter the bank. Our grad programs are also changing so this is also a relatively exciting time and just the experience at the bank has been incredible to not want to come back.
The Culture
the team went out at least once a week so it was very lively. We interns met every week as well to lighten the mood and would sometimes meet during the day to take a coffee break and catch up. The team is very inviting as well, whenever they were going out they would invite as well, went to watch a last minute cricket match with them one evening. Despite the fun it was a great networking opportunity, because I was the only intern around about 30 employees.
We had the opportunity to take part in some charity events, for one of them we went for the day to a kids charity and helped clean up their place. It was a very insightful day, in particular for someone like me who has never really had an affiliation with a charity per say. Apart from this we also had the opportunity to show around a-level and IGCSE students around the office for the day, wasn't difficult was just something to give them an overview of what a bank does to a generic level. It was not a test or anything and all activities were optional.
