The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. I had the chance to network with a lot of people, from other interns to managing directors, and I also participated to meetings with external stakeholders. I was involved in projects with several teams and I feel I learnt a lot in terms of technical and soft skills thanks to the diversity of my tasks. Also, I've been involved in extra work activities such as volunteering and social events, which was great.
I constantly felt valued by my colleagues - they've been respectful all the time, actively asked for my opinion/help on several projects and acknowledged my contribution.
I was frequently given support, especially over the first weeks of my internship. At time my manager was pretty busy, but in those cases I asked other team members for help or I worked on other projects. In general, despite being busy, my supervisor has always been extremely helpful when needed.
I was quite busy as I had several meetings and projects going on with different teams. However, the workload was very balanced, I never got bored and at the same time I've never felt there was too much stuff to do.
I was given responsibility at all times. I was fully accountable for some individual projects and I had shared responsibility for team wide projects. I worked independently most of the time and even delivered a presentation to the wider team in a leading role.
The skills developed and training received have been extremely useful for my degree. I improved my knowledge on capital markets and economic trends, and I developed a broad knowledge on financial products, which will be useful for my final year dissertation. However, if I could improve something, I would ask for additional training on IT skills (complex excel formulas, financial software,...)
The Company
The atmosphere was relaxed and everybody was quite informal. It got just a bit noisy at times.
The internship was set up well, however HR failed to tell us that we would be experiencing an office move during our time at the company. This resulted in significant changes within my department, so I would have preferred being informed about that when I started the internship.
I think Barclays invested in me a lot. They gave me plenty of material to read to increase my knowledge on the industry, and they spent time with me to teach me practical skills. Also, they invited me to several and diverse meetings to get a 360 degrees exposure on the business.

The Culture
Yes, there were plenty of social activities organised on a weekly basis with other interns and colleagues.
It was pretty high but it was proportionate to the salary.
Nightlife in Canary Wharf is not great at weekends - it is alright during the week though.
There were lots of activities to get involved in outside of work - volunteering events, parties, visits to other facilities, ...
