The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in Corporate Banking at Barclays. I had the opportunity to not only work on assigned projects, modelling and due diligence, but also take part in client facing aspects of the business.
I felt valued at all times. There is a strong collegiate culture at Barclays. I also had the opportunity to join the team at a charity sports event.
I was given guidance in the beginning and whenever I asked for it. It is important to be proactive in order to gain as much out of the experience as possible.
Supporting the team tended to be the busiest and most interesting days. I think my level of 'busyness' depended mainly on the pace I finished my assigned tasks. By being proactive and asking for tasks whenever I had less on my plate, I got more responsibilities towards the end of the internship.
My responsibilities gradually increased during the summer. The largest issue was the internship IT setup, which prevented me from accessing certain systems and databases I had been given prior permission to. Therefore I was unable to fully support the team in certain aspects.
The skills I developed and the training I received gave me a practical context to my studies. Interning at Barclays deepened my understanding of applied finance.
The Company
The atmosphere was good!
Overall I think it was well set up considering the internship lasts 9 weeks. There could have been a few more intern-wide events organised, particularly in the beginning.
Barclays invests a lot into the training and development of its staff, including its interns. The internship begins with 2-5 days of training, depending which division you are placed in. I would find it useful if CB interns also participated in the modelling training during the first week.

Working from home
In Corporate Banking, Barclays is very well positioned to continue be an even more dominant player in the UK market. Time will tell how this will translate into EMEA. Having gone through a massive restructuring during the past few years, Barclays is now in a great position to grow. Future employment prospects are bright and I look forward to (hopefully) coming back as a graduate in 2018.
The Culture
There is a good social scene amongst the interns.
London.
What you'd expect from London. There is also a good range of places to go for drinks in Canary Wharf.
I participated in two charity events.
