    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a really eye opening experience. It helped me develop lots of skills and gave me an opportunity to explore the roles at Barclays and gain an insight into some of the roles I may end up in. The people were lovely and I loved coming in and being in the working community everyday.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by colleagues. I was given actual work to do that would have an impact on the business and I was given the opportunity to have my voice heard. I was invited to all the team socials and everyone treated me like I was one of the team. Couldn't have worked with a nicer group of people. They made the internship for me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given lots of support by management overall. There was a lack of structure and support to begin with as my line manager was on holiday and I was unable to access any IT for a week, but after that the structure became more defined. I was given space to be independent but encouraged and welcomed to ask advice and questions whenever needed. If I wanted more support I felt comfortable I could have gone and asked for it, but I valued the independence I was given also.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Sometimes the day was relaxed and I had finished all the work by 5, but this was fairly rare as there was always something to occupy me after the third week. There was lots to do (easily more I could have asked for and got involved with if I had the time) and I was generally fairly busy on a daily basis. At times I felt overwhelmed by the work, but this helped me learn how to cope with it and developed time management skills. I would say I worked a full 9-6 day with a 30 min lunch break (I could have easily taken more time for the break but I felt it was unnecessary and would prefer to come back to the desk and work).

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a lot of responsibility. Not enough that I felt worried about doing something wrong, but I have been able to communicate directly with clients, have contacted lots of senior people in the bank without supervision and have felt that I have been given actual work to do, which is the best kind of responsibility as I am doing something that will affect people.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It wont help much with my degree study as I don't think degrees are that applicable to the work one would do within a bank (you learn much more actually doing a job in a few weeks than the degree teaches you). It has helped me massively however for a future career as has helped my confidence,, communication and time management skills which I think are most important for work. The experience has also made me value my last year of university more, as I know what I need to work on that will best prepare me in later life throughout the next year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Serious but at the same time very friendly. It was easy to fit in and do work but it wasnt intimidating to ask questions or talk to people. Perfect balance between professional and friendly.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was terribly organised at the start as something went wrong with my IT, however after a few weeks I think it was perfectly organised. There wasnt too much structure (as this is never good because you need a degree of flexibility) but there was enough that i felt comfortable and knew what i was doing.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was massively invested in. The amount of time the staff spent answering questions (which everyone did very willingly) and teaching me things was amazing. I dont think you would get a better development experience anywhere else. I was pushed out of my comfort zone, but not too much, so that I could develop skills that I needed developing but everyone was very aware of my limits and was very understanding of personal circumstances also.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, I would love to come back to a full time job and I know there are lots of different roles that you can move around in within Barclays. I would have liked to have an idea of how the pay would have increased through the grade positions however (eg. BA4, AVP, VP, Director, Managing Director) to have a better idea about future prospects as you dont feel like it is ok to ask anyone

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, very good social scene. Invited out with colleagues and went out every Friday with other interns, but lots of social events put on by the graduate team also. Not too much though as otherwise would have been overwhelming.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very expensive, but this is London so you wouldnt be able to find anywhere cheap anyway. Was good because we are given a living allowance which shows that Barclays recognise the cost of living and socialising and have subsidised us for it.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife was good, lots of opportunity to go out on Fridays but generally not my scene. Went for drinks but was always quite tired so left by 10pm. Know lots of people who went clubbing every friday after work however so know there was opportunity to do so and was invited multiple times

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Lots of opportunities, had a team sports day (twice) and lots of activities that the graduate team put on.
