The Role
I had a great time on the investment internship scheme at M&G. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to get a taste of life on the buyside!
I slotted into the existing investment process for my team, which meant that I was doing work which I could see impacting the fund immediately. I feel like my work was valued by my colleagues for this reason.
My line manager sat me down on the first day and we discussed exactly what I wanted to get out of the internship. I can honestly say he then went above and beyond to help me achieve these goals, and deliberately put me on projects that would facilitate my learning objectives. We also had weekly catch-ups to ensure I was on track. Cannot rate the level of support from him higher.
I was involved in the day-to-day of my team, which I found out entailed very sociable hours. Generally got in for 0730 (this was by choice) and left around 1800/1830. I found these hours agreeable.
As mentioned above, I was helping out with the funds pre-existing investment process. To that end, I was given ownership over projects that had a meaningful impact on the fund.
The excel skills I learned will certainly help me in my wider career. Also, the softer skills, managing expectations, documenting my work, transparency etc. will be definitely be of use.
The Company
Nice atmosphere, everyone is very friendly and approachable, and ice creams on Friday don't hurt!
Well organised internship, had a structure that was communicated to us from day one, which was stuck to.
All the interns had talks from various parts of the business, fixed income investment, equity investment, tech, risk etc. and then the investment interns also had their own sessions with each different investment department, so we all got a really good overview of M&G as a whole. I also got to go on an external training day for a specific platform that my team used, which was really useful.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
In the future I could definitely see myself returning to M&G, it seems like a great place to work!
The Culture
Good social scene, nights out organised by our social sec. Nice bunch of people to work with.
London is expensive, but that's the nature of the city.
I didn't go, but was told it was good.
Yes, HR were really good at organising various events (e.g. pub quizzes, rounders) to help the interns get to know each other. Beyond that, as interns ourselves there we organised things independently. Also went to see Dunkirk with my team, which was good fun.
