The Role
I've found the whole experience truly enriching and interesting. I've met many wonderful and interesting people and I have learnt so much about the industry and about how I could potentially fit into it in the future.
I felt that particular colleagues were very consciously making sure that I was always busy and content in the given task. I also felt valued and accepted as an individual and always felt included in the social activity of the office. Increasingly, I felt that my co-workers understood at what level my experience was, meaning that they could give me appropriate tasks.
I was lucky enough to be involved in numerous projects in both the MEP and sustainability teams, meaning I had a variety of supervisors. This offered a great insight into the different roles within the office, but also into the different ways of thinking of the employees. By observing which method of supervision suited me, I will hopefully be able to transfer these skills into any future managerial roles that I may take on.
It would completely depend on the day. Being between departments would mean at times that I was very busy, but it also meant that I was occasionally idle, whilst each team would decide what would be the next best use of my time.
I was certainly treated as a normal employee and my work within the central files would genuinely contribute to the projects, but always with the security of an employee checking through my work. Considering much of the work was in my second language, I was glad to take a backseat in meetings and consolations, listening rather than contributing, I felt I was given an appropriate and comfortable level of responsibility.
I've learnt so much that will absolutely contribute to my studies. Many things that have previously been a mystery during my degree have now been explained and the basic introduction into the software Revit is going to be invaluable. I feel excited about how this internship will influence my performance in my final year of my degree.
The Company
Convivial and welcoming. There's a strong level of respect and friendship between employees, and a real effort was made to include me within this. Small things such as the weekly yoga sessions, and the spontaneous cakes and ice creams made for a very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
I occasionally felt that it would have been beneficial for the other employees to have a better understanding of the degree I was coming from. This was the only point of communication that perhaps could have been stronger and better organized. Otherwise, the expectations from the office were clearly stated.
Having received a scholarship through the Happold Foundation, I feel incredibly grateful and indebted to the company. On top of this, I was consistently offered advice and support in moving from the UK to Berlin, and was given extremely valuable training in software and sustainable development.

Very appealing, but perhaps with a stronger emphasis on sustainability rather than MEP engineering.
The Culture
Yes, there was a strong understanding of the importance of social connection within the team and there were often excursions and events to which everyone was welcome.
I was fortunate in finding a particularly cheap place to live in close proximity to the workplace, meaning I had time to pursue my own hobbies out of work hours.
Directly in the district that I worked there is less nightlife, however its never more than 30 mins on the U Bahn in Berlin to find some of the best event spaces, clubs, bars and restaurants I've ever visited.
Yes, there was weekly yoga classes and German lessons..
