The Role
Enjoyed my ten week summer placement at Mace. Had a good opportunity to get involved on a number of elements within a project, where I was responsible for leading the delivery of certain parts of the project. Enjoyed social events as well.
Felt valued because I had responsibility to manager certain things, so I could say "I had done that" and people would appreciate what I myself had contributed.
Generally support was good, although as a returning placement student sometimes things were not explained/assumed in one or two instances.
Generally speaking quite variable as I was responsible for managing my own time effectively. Some days would be a rush to get things ready before a deadline, others more relaxed waiting for others to complete work. Good structure to the day (routine) though variable with frequent events, workshops and training sessions arranged over the 10 week period.
A fairly high level, responsible for several elements of the project with oversight and involvement in others. Told what to do, then given the initiative to go and achieve it, rather than being led at every step.
Skills, particular meeting/presenting and communication, developed which will help at University and in future career.
The Company
Good atmosphere, friendly and lots of different people to work with day to day (as hot-desking so don't always sit next to the same people).
Very well organized, although I had worked at Mace before so had some idea of what to expect. Emails from HR clear and line manager aware of what I should be doing and the requirements during the placement. Welcome event good.
Invited to CPD/training sessions with team.
Subsidised Canteen
Hopefully interested in returning for the graduate programme, either in the same team or in a different sector within the business unit.
The Culture
Yes, and the existing graduates/colleagues.
Quite expensive, especially social events close to the office. However sometimes subsidized by the leadership team. As living at home only significant cost was a season ticket.
Yes, including volunteering and social events, however dates did not always co-incide with placement period.
