The Role
I interned within the Equity Research division at Barclays. I thoroughly enjoyed my 9 weeks. I learnt an awful amount about a role within equity research and had some really good projects to get involved in as part of my assessment process. Barclays treat their interns incredibly well and put on a number of opportunities for you to meet senior people within the Investment Bank on a regular basis.
I felt very valued by both my immediate team as well as the wider Research division. Everyone was as keen to get to know me as I was about getting to meet them.
The senior management team at Barclay's Equity Research division have a very hands on approach to the interns. They would always go out of their way to speak to you and check that everything was running smoothly. They also have an open door policy so you can go in and speak to them when you want. Often you were able to go speak to either the deputy head or head of Research about any issue you liked, whether personal or professional.
There was a very good balance between being worked hard and challenged but also getting to spend time meeting with people in the department. Although the hours are long (generally 6:30am-7pm) the day goes incredibly quickly and I don't remember ever clocking watching within my 9 weeks. You are also kept busy as you are juggling internship projects with the work from your individual desk.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement. As it is a client facing role the amount you can be given is limited as you have to sit exams before you are eligible to speak to client. However, I always felt that my work was actually useful to the team and they always acknowledged my contribution.
I had completed a MSc Finance before starting my internship so my 9 weeks really tested my understanding rather than expanded upon them.
The Company
Everyone is incredibly friendly and always willing to speak to you. There is also a lot of people who are talking around you so there is a good atmosphere of working across teams/sectors/desks.
The internship was very well organized. The HR team regularly organized very interesting events with senior members of the bank and were very helpful as well.
Financial Bonus
Very appealing. With the regulation that is coming into effect in 2018 Research is an industry that is changed but I feel very positive about Barclay's ability to excel in these times.
The Culture
Its London so it is always going to be expensive but Barclays do provide a living allowance which is very generous
