The Role
I loved my first rotation (Credit Trading), I worked horrendous hours at times but I had a smile on my face as I loved who I was working with and what I was doing.
Truth be told on the Trading floor an intern is at the bottom of most people's priorities but you can approach people and after a few attempts people will give you the time of today once they are free from whatever they are doing. Credit had a very well structured programme so you dod feel valued considering how much time they gave you
People are nice and will help you so long as you show that you have taken the steps to help yourself for starters
I was kept busy with the work I had but I never found myself unable to do work as I had too much on. Days were things were quieter just meant I had to go and shadow ppeople, do some research and make my own work
I never had any input in material business matters, as interns you don't have the correct regs in place to get involved in that kind of way. But I could help with work that traders were doing that was important.
Trading doesn't help with any degree but you do learn a lot about finance and the wider world around you as well as how to think critically
The Company
The trading floor is not like any office, and depending on where you are on the floor the atmosphere is different. Modern Equity desk are quiet, FX and Rates are still loud and energetic anD Credit has the perfect balance.
HR did a good job of sorting out all aspects of the 9 week programme
We had 3 days of extensive training, there is access to online resources, weekly sessions to explain various parts of Markets and most importantly you have access to so many experienced people who you can learn from
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Barclays is on the up over the next few years and its stratergy on IB is moving in the right direction
The Culture
Can get along with most interns and go out for drinks or meals. Really depends on who you have in your cohort.
London is expensive and so is Canary Wharf but you do get paid well so everyhting is affordable.
Lots of bars and resturants in Canary Wharf and there are plenty of people. No clubs here but Shoreditch and other clubbing areas aren't that far
I did some volounteering outside of my main intern role both within and outside of the firm. Interns did get involved with some sports leagues and casual play
