The Role
The internship was a delighful experience. From the 2-Day induction right through the mid-term and end of term reviews, the programme was very well structured. Not to mention the weekly insight programmes that gives valuable information about other departments outside the one you're working in, it was an educative and rewarding experience. A number of Directors/managing Directors were quite easily accessible.
Everyone is willing to help or point you in the direction which you can obtain help. The impact of your work can also be easily seen within the team. Occasional outings also makes you feel valued within the team and you're included in weekly meetings and also given a chance to air your views on issues.
Support was available all through both from management and supervisor. The recruitment staff were particularly helpful in answering any questions and concerns I had. My supervisor was also very helpful in getting the required permissions and softwares to carry out the set objectives. My supervisor was also on hand to lend a helping hand when stuck inbetween the project or point me in the direction in which help can be obtained.
Quite busy. The objectives made sure there was always something you are looking at acheiving within the period of time that you're here. Depending on knowledge set, you might have to brush up the skills you need to perform your objectives within the first couple of weeks but afterwards implementing what you have learnt will take away the "pain" of the learning curve. There are certainly quiet periods during a day but overall the programme was engaging and challenging enough.
Quite a lot of responsibility. I had the opportunity of shadowing team members and although I did not have the required permissions to carry out their responsibilities, as they affect the live production environment, I had a good feel of what they do. I was also able to move within the teams in order to broaden my knowledge of the work the team does. Despite the fact that my team deals with things that affect the bank directly, I was given a task that has a direct impact on the work the team does.
To a large extent. I have been able to develop both technical and soft skills which will be useful beyond my degree studies. I have also acquired new programming skills and honed existing ones in the process of carrying out my objectives. I believe these skills can make me an independent developer or very valuable member of any organisation.
The Company
Relaxed. Everyone comes in to a friendly atmosphere with jokes and banter within the teams. As with every large organisation and large office, it is not easy to know everyone in the floor that you work in but in general there is a cool calm and ambient atmosphere in the office.
Very well organised. The structure was amazing and the human resource team did a wonderful job of checking up on individuals, inquiring about how the programme was going, what could done to make it more enjoyable and things like that. Overall, the flow was seamless, there was ample information to get to know the organisation and ample time to contribute your quota to the team where you've been placed.
This is where I feel the company can do more. However, since this was an internship, i understand it there has to be a balance between having a feel of the company and personal training and development. There was a bit of training around finance in the beginning of the program but there were no specific training that could help you hit the ground running in the team where you will be placed.

Very appealing. The organisation is undergoing some transformation and as such, there are a number of vacancies within the organisation. Based on performance and the skills you possess, there is a very high probability that you will be offered a job within the organisation.
The Culture
Yeah. There was usually a friday drink out in a bar organised and attended by fellow placement students.
London is quite expensive. so the cost of living is on the high side, socialising also falls along the line of being expensive. Transportation is also on the high side when compared to other cities in the UK.
I am not really much of a night person but i hear there were a couple of night outs.
There was a citizenship challenge which helped to solve real world challenges faced by charities. Apart from helping charities, I was also able to develop my team work and interpersonal skills. Though the programme was for a short period of time, there is usually lots of opportunites to get involved in activities outside work, social activities, sports and other things of interest.
