The Role
Really enjoyed summer internship. Worked within Sales in Markets and had two rotations which I really enjoyed. I enjoyed it as I learnt a huge amount about the different products and Barclays really has a culture allowing you to go round and sit with other desks and learn about different asset classes, as well as allowing you to meet with senior members. Very well structured and a lot of fun
2Barclays is a great place to work, and this is particularly down to the people that work there. Within both teams felt very valued by colleagues, and the values of Barclays really shine through in its people. Both teams allowed me to shadow all members of the team, and also gave me tasks and work that I felt added genuine value.
Line managers provided a lot of support and guidance. At the start of the internship we are given particular team specific objectives to complete. As interns we give our comments, and then line managers give feedback on performance. They are also available to speak to regularly if you have any problems / require feedback. Feel the management and all members of time really invest a lot of time into their interns
Overall, we were given a good amount of work. I did find sometimes there are times there is very little to do be doing. This can come about as sometimes everyone in the team is very busy, and we are obviously not able to talk to clients etc. Then sometimes, work built up and we were busy which is good. I think one way to improve this would the desk think of a few main projects
In terms of responsibility, I think we were given a good amount and we were given the freedom and autonomy to approach projects in the way we wanted. As my internship was in Sales and is therefore a client facing role, we couldn’t talk with clients and therefore giving us real responsibilities is difficult
During the internship we were given a lot of training and mentoring. The first week was training on the different asset classes, so that we were ready when we joined the desks. Managers and members of the team would then provide us with more training and a more detailed insight into what the desk does. Barclays also require us to complete mandatory online training, which added to our knowledge further. These skills can definitely be used in degree studies further, as I study business
The Company
7) General atmosphere in the office was good. General moral was strong and I enjoyed being in the office. People work very hard but know how to have fun and make the work enjoyable. I enjoyed sitting on the trading floor, thought this was very exciting. The culture at Barclays is really string and this is reflected through the office
Internship was very well organized and structured. Received lots of communication prior to starting and received lots of communication from HR throughout the internship about events and what we should be doing. In Sales, there are two rotations which I think are good. I think there could be more opportunity to go spend longer amounts of time on other desk, just so you can broaden your horizons
9) As stated earlier, the bank invests a lot of time into their interns. The initial training week was very valuable and senior members from the bank gave up their time to talk to us and answer questions. When on the actual internship, we were encouraged to go speak with senior personnel within the bank, who provided advice and support
Barclays is a very appealing and attractive place to work in the future. Really enjoyed the whole culture of the firm, and feel this is what gives the bank its real USP. Very professional but friendly. It is a lot of fun but you do work very hard. I think they have got the balance right. I think this would be a great future job as it would be intellectually challenging and stimulating
The Culture
Pretty good social scene among interns. Not a huge amount arranged by HR, but a lot of the individual teams organise social events. On the last day there is a big interns social event. The area is good for social scene. Within the office, there was a good social scene as interns would go for lunch etc
The cost of living and socializing is quite a lot in Canary Wharf. It is an expensive area and living around the area is expensive too. Would recommend living a bit further out. Still, a lot of people did socialize in the area and there are definitely more affordable places
Nightlife in Canary Wharf is pretty good during the week. A lot of people would be out, especially on a Thursday and Fridays, although the area is pretty quiet on weekends. Small area which makes the nightlife good as often a lot of people you know which is good. It is expensive though
Couple of opportunities to get involved in activities out of work. For example there is a big focus on carrying out citizenship events in the bank, which involve normally doing charity work in the local community. In regards to social events, there were things arranged by teams such as football tournaments and games of softball which are good for teambuilding activities
