The Role
My placement was not ideal in terms of personal interest and academic and professional background I have had so far. However, the opportunities provided and the learning exposure I got from both tasks and collaborations with more senior colleagues provided me with multiple further paths to pursue a future career.
The overall team environment in which I worked was very supportive to my learning and growth as an intern. In this sense, I felt valued by my colleagues who also provided both positive and helpful constructive feedback continually throughout my time working at Barclays.
I was given plenty of support and guidance from my Line manager and other senior colleagues at Director level, especially considering the busy nature of their work. From this, I was very impressed with the time and attention senior colleagues at Barclays allocated to allow me to learn and improve at my job.
This varied each day, but in general I was given more work the more I requested and asked to be involved with differen workstreams in my team. So, I was fairly busy most days, but also had time to self-reflect and network with people in other teams during the day.
I was given a fair bit of responsibility, but overall the work my team did was very specialized and required experience in order to move onto higher levels of responsibility.
In terms of raw skills, the internship was very helpful mostly on the qualitative side of things. So I feel I could use the project management and problem solving skills, that I gained by working alongside colleagues globally, further along in my career.
The Company
The atmosfere was professional for the most part, given that the people I worked most closely with were somewhat older than me. However, there were occasional moments when the atmosphere was more fun.
The Internship was well planned, in my opinion. However, the placement and preference part before an intern comes in could use improvement.
I was provided ample opportunities for personal development, including training and tutoring sessions with senior colleagues. In my opinion, Barclays invests a lot to ensure its employees have opportunity for personal development.
Company Parties/Events
Future employment prospects are very appealing to me, especially since the Graduate Scheme at Barclays allows rotations into different areas, so that one can gain experience and figure out where their skills and interests are best suited for. In addition, for international students who require a worker visa like me, Barclays was very helpful and accomodating.
The Culture
There was a good social scene among fellow interns. However, given that we worked on different floors in two separate buildings, the social interaction with other interns was somewhat limited.
The cost of living in London is very high. In terems of socializing, there were many opportunities, just with a higher price tag.
Canary Wharf does not have much of a nightlife, but the pubs in this part of London are decent and there is a few to choose from.
There were multiple opportunities for me to get involved in charity activities with the internship, networking events and plenty of sports venues close by where I lived.
