The Role
It was a very enjoyable internship. The internship programme definitely focuses on ensuring that interns leave having learnt about whether banking is for them, whether their product is for them, and whether they can see themselves on another product. Everyone was always willing to sit down with you and explain their roles, which created a great atmosphere.
I felt valued by my colleagues as I was given tasks that would help my desk. The tasks would help my desk on their day to day job, so it felt like you were helping to make a difference. You are not just given a task for the sake of being kept busy. People are always willing to hear your thoughts too.
My manager was very helpful, and would always take my thoughts on board when giving me tasks in the future. I would say the internship was very flexible as you could tailor it based on where your interests were and what you wanted more exposure to. If you expressed your thoughts to your line manager, they would support you and help you achieve what you wanted to.
I was never given too much work. There was an emphasis on enjoying the internship and getting a feel for the job, rather than having too much work to do and not gaining an understanding of the business. I was kept busy, having tasks to do, but you were fine as long as you managed your time well.
The work I did would have an impact on the team so that was always a good sign as it showed that they trusted me. The team would trust you to manage your own schedule, getting things completed in a timely manner, while exploring your other interests. You are definitely given a great deal of responsibility.
The training I received will definitely help me in my career. I now have a much greater understanding of the different asset classes, and of how different roles require different skills. There is a focus on ongoing training, with the opportunity to sit with any desk that you are interested in, so you get to learn both the theory as well as how it is applied on the job.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was amazing. The environment is always changing, so it is always interesting to see how my colleagues react to this as the day progresses. Generally speaking, everyone is welcoming and truly have your best interests at heart. If you are keen to learn, Barclays will really help you move forward.
The internship was very well organised. It started off with a few days training, giving us an overview of all the different asset classes, starting from the basics, to some technical knowledge. This was helpful as it set out a good foundation for the internship that we could build on. Then once we started work in the office, there were regular lectures for interns to learn more, as well as several networking events.
The company invested a lot into my personal training and development from the very first day of the internship. The initial training was very helpful as it allowed me to gain a greater understanding to other areas within Markets that I did not know much about before. Even while on the internship, I could ask to want to explore a particular area in more depth, and Barclays would make that happen.
Company Parties/Events
Future employment prospects within Barclays are great. Once you are on a particular role, the company supports you in developing your career. This does not necessarily mean that you have to remain on the same desk. If you are interested in moving to a different desk or even a different division within the bank, you could tell your manager and this would happen over time. Barclays has a great amount of internal mobility.
The Culture
There was a good social scene among both the interns as well as with the colleagues. Interns would meet up regularly to go out, and there were also sporting events that interns organised such as football games on the weekend. With colleagues, there would be at least one social event in a week, which really helped to get to know everyone better.
I lived at home so there was no living cost, but socializing is expensive as is expected in London.
Very good as expected in London.
