    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a fantastic experience. The internship allowed me to work on both life and non life work and allowed me to gain a very relevant insight of the insurance industry. The opportunities to get involved with client work were always presented to us and we had a combination of training and visit days that allowed us to learn and develop our knowledge and understanding of the industry.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Each person within the company was extremely friendly and thoughtful. Everyone, no matter their level of seniority had time to help and was more than happy to do so. When we made suggestion as interns they were either acted upon or they explained to us why it was unable to be implemented and we were asked to do work that would provide a real contribution to projects. The way in which things work here is fantastic and you are made to feel like part of the team and not as though you are inferior.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The structure of the internship meant that we were given support in different ways by different people. We had project managers and line managers as well as buddy's. The line managers supported us with the general things within the internship, ensuring our work load was appropriate and that we we're not having any problems. They met with us frequently and helped us through the duration of our time here. The project specific managers helped us with the technical knowledge and more specific tasks relating to the work we had been allocated. Again frequent communication and outstanding support was given. Finally our buddy helped us with all of the smaller things and helped us with the transition between uni and work life. Overall a fantastic amount of support was given.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • We we're kept fairly busy throughout the duration of the internship with some weeks being busier than others. Initially it was a fairly slow start but it soon picked up and by the end of the internship we found ourselves declining additional work as we had so much to do! It was a real true exposure to how the company works and the work life balance here is fantastic!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was trusted with client work from about week 2/3. This comes with a lot of responsibility as your work is being billed to the client and the work you produce may be sent back to them. We we're given a lot of responsibility to complete our work as and when we could and time manage ourselves and ensure that all of our deadlines were met.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Personally I study a degree in Actuarial Science so for me the skills will help within my degree as I will be able to have a better understanding of the application of the theoretical knowledge that I learn and gain. I also picked up many transferable skills, particularly interpersonal skills across office as we had multiple offices and can be needed to communicate with various different people. I also developed presentation skills that will be applicable within my degree and further.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly. Everyone is always willing to help, make a tea round and have a chat. People are always smiling and always want you to do the best you can do! They are always looking for ways to celebrate successes and all go out for lunch on a Friday together!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fantastic. There are not many places where you can be cross resourced between life and non life work. Here you gain an exposure to both and receive training and visit days to help your industry knowledge.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company sent us on multiple training and visit days and we had a minimum of 1 per week. We learnt how to use multiple software pieces and saw how they are used in the insurance industry. We also went to Lloyds of London as part of the internship and learnt about the different ways that insurance works there.

  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Extremely appealing. I would love to work for the company as a graduate. They have interesting work opportunities and have a fantastic grad scheme with good study support.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other interns we're great. They always went out for lunch together and socialized with each other. The other people in the team were also fantastic always asking if we wanted to pop to the pub and things like that.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reigate and London are both very expensive places however a lot of the social events we're paid for or subsidized by the company! I personally lived in London which again is expensive but is worth it in my opinion.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Reigate is limited and there is not much to do later on in the evenings however there are quite a few pubs that you can go to after work. In London however there is a wide range of night life options that will suit all different preferences.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were some opportunities to get involved with sport and such but the main thing was going for drinks. In particular exam drinks and the summer social event.
