The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Barclays. It was well organised and structured whilst allowing me to have some flexibility over what I wanted to do and achieve.
I was given responsibility immediately and exceeded my colleagues expectations therefore I did feel valued by them. Sometimes I felt slightly ignored but this was due to the team being extremely busy and I was given the resources to do my own research and continue my learning independently.
I was given a lot of support and guidance but this was balanced by independent learning and responsibility. If I had a question or a query I knew I could immediately go to my manager, grad recruitment or anybody on my team and ask for help.
On 75% I was busy. The other 25% were just due to projects being completed or when I was just starting or finishing my internship. However, I was easily able to go and sit with other teams in other areas of the bank to fill my time when needed.
I was given a fair amount and took the lead on a big project. As I proved I was capable I was involved in more important tasks and felt like a true member of the team.
As I want to go into this role as a career the skills I have learnt will be invaluable. In regard to my studies, the role has definitely taught me more team skills and time management skills.
The Company
Friendly, open but people were getting on with their jobs which made me want to get on with mine.
Extremely well organised. I was set tasks and objectives both from Grad recruitment, my manager and myself from the beginning of the internship which were fair and achievable.
I felt like I was heavily invested in and I believed Barclays when they said they were investing in us as talent of the future. Lots of talks with CEO's and heads of businesses were arranged which gave us a wide insight into all aspects of the bank and it appeared as if they wanted to keep us for the long haul rather than a fight between interns to get on the Grad scheme.

Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. I feel like I know where i would like my career trajectory to go but feel able to join role, division and team easily if I want to in the future. The grad scheme offers a great 2 year development plan into full time employment.
The Culture
Yes mostly. As there was a Spring Week the year before a bit of a clique formed between some interns. This was also true of certain divisions. There could have been more social events organised by grad recruitment.
Cost of living and socialising was higher than I was used to but not unexpected considering I was based in Canary Wharf, London. Our salaries were able to cover our expenses.
It is a tube ride over to where nightlife mainly is but there are plenty of bars around which can be expensive.
Kind of but they weren't readily advertised to us.
