The Role
People at the workplace are generally very nice. However not all participating desks made good arrangements to ensure interns to learn as much as they can.
If the intern is proactive, he/she can be given extra tasks. Generally, my colleagues do respect every intern.
Very few, it really requires individual effort to complete the task. It is a great way for one to exercise skills and pick up knowledge though.
There isn't a clear structure in everyday job, so it can be boring at times. But there is always new things to be learnt, therefore, you can always keep yourself busy.
Quite a lot. A lot data I have access to is sensitive. However, my supervisor trusts me.
Finance is entirely different from the science degree I studied. Therefore there is little connection. Such is common in this industry anyway.
The Company
It is extremely loud and sometimes crazy during the market hour. Every one is just too busy. This is exactly what a trading floor should be like.
The programme is well organised, but the job is not. As I mentioned, not all desks prepared well for the intern at their desk.
The company provides each intern bloomberg login which is rare among other banks on the street. The HR department does give the intern a lot of attention.
It could be better. But due to the euro debt crisis, only around 30% sales&trading interns got a job offer. Some desks completely stopped hiring.
The Culture
Some junior people on the desks are kind and generous and did invite people for a drink after work on Friday.
It was high in the City in central London.
I do not really care. People are exhausted after work generally.
There are lots charity work outside work to keep us busy.
