The Role
I definitely enjoyed my internship with LBG this year. Having already completed an internship last summer, I found working in a completely different department very rewarding and insightful, and it allowed me to gain a wider understanding of the business. I had a good relationship with my team and also was kept busy at most times.
I felt very valued by my colleagues as I felt like they treated me like a new employee rather than an intern. They were very eager to offer help whenever it was needed but also give me the space and responsibility to work on projects alone.
I felt supported the majority of the time during my placement with my supervisor giving me help and guidance but also allowing me to use my own initiative and complete projects alone.
I was often quite busy during my internship however there were days when I had very little to do. As a lot of colleagues work from home and as the internships take place during the summer holidays and a lot of colleagues take holiday during this time, it can sometimes be a struggle to ask for more work.
I was happy with the amount of responsibility I was given during my internship having the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues on projects, work alone on projects and also present during team calls.
I have definitely developed my collaboration skills during my internship and also my time management. This will definitely enable me to work more effectively at university when in a team but also when alone.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office was good and my team were all very welcoming. However, as it was during the summer holidays, the team were often on holidays, sometimes at the same time, and I was sometimes left alone in the office. Nevertheless, the team were all very welcoming and when they were in the office, it was good to have them there.
I would say the internship was organised very well. My line manager was very prepared when I started the internship with all of my IT sorted and access to all of the necessary programmes granted.
During my internship, there was a development curriculum put in place for all interns. This involved webinars before and during the internship and also an online course giving an introduction to banking. I feel like there could have been slightly more emphasis placed on personal development, but nevertheless, what was in place was beneficial.
I have decided not to work for the organisation following the internship, simply because this isn't the industry I am passionate about. However, Lloyds are a great company to work for which has been evident in both of my internships I have completed. A key thing I have noticed is that Lloyds is very flexible with colleagues and seem to be a great organisation to work for. If this was the industry I wanted to be in, I would definitely find future employment prospects very appealing.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst the interns as a whole with interns often having lunch together or going into town together after work/during the weekends.
It wasn't too expensive to live or socialise in Bristol as it is a student city and therefore has a lot of cheap pubs and bars in the town.
The nightlife was good - there are a variety of clubs across town and also a lot of pubs, taken advantage of during the annual Pub Rally at Lloyds.
Lloyds run an annual Pub Rally each year which people are encouraged to get involved in. There could have been more opportunities but due to most people being very busy during the day and also commuting, there wasn't too many.
