The Role
I really enjoyed my internship on the whole. I got to live in a great city that I hadn’t spent much time in, I got to meet plenty of new people and really just got to experience the corporate world in a way never really had before. My line manager was very supportive s were all my team.
Very valued- they were very supportive of me and tried to answer all my questions, despite there being loads, where they could. It’s hard that I don’t have the knowledge they have but I just tried to pick it up as quick as I could and help where possible whilst also still learning.
My team were really short of staff due to illness and abscesses. This made it hard as their time was massively reduced as their work load continued to rise. Despite this they all still welcomed me and tried to support and guide me as much as they could. As my internship went on I needed less guidance.
It massively depended on the day- some days I was so busy and didn’t really know what was going on. I much preferred these days as time went so quickly. However, there were some days were I did feel bored and time did drag. However, these were not often and usually I could find something to keep myself busy.
I was given a lot of responsibility- partly due to the stretch of the team. But I also had 3 key deliveries that5 I knew about before I started and these were key business processes which helped with my motivation as it was actions that would make a difference to the business.
The skills I’ve learnt are not so important for my university life but very important for after university and joining the working world. This included skills such as meeting etiquette through to knowing how all the technology works. The skills I have learnt in 10 weeks will help me massively as I move onwards and upwards with my career.
The Company
The general atmosphere was really positive. I felt there was always people to ask about their role and to find more information about the business. However, there were some days where the office felt really empty and sparse but I think this is just due to it being the summer and so many colleagues taking time off.
The communication between LBG and Reed has been quite bad. They need to sort one line of communication and follow that. There have been many mixed messages about holiday, sick leave, bank holidays etc where there has been conflicting information. Following this- interns are then unsure who they need to report to if they do have a question creating further confusion.
I feel there has been a lot invested in. Firstly financially, they paid for our accommodation and our pay. Then there is the time, the time our line managers and teams give up is quite a lot over 10 weeks. Then there are the intern events where there is a great effort and preparation level required.
The future at LBG is appealing. Their work life balance is very encouraging as I look forwards the future and how supportive they are in all life stages with family, illness and other factors. There is also plenty of scope for moving around the business in a variety of role and meeting plenty of people.
The Culture
Because we all lived together there was a great atmosphere between us. Most evenings we would go for dinner or go for drinks or even just a walk. There was plenty to do in the city and we all embraced it as much as we could and got on well.
Bristol can be an expensive city however due to the large student population there is plenty of opportunity to go out and abut on a budget. we found loads of things to do and places to go for a very low cost that meant that everyone could join in meaning more socialising.
