    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was class. I did an internship last summer and compared to that one I got so much out of this one. The job itself is really something that I could see myself doing and the team that I was in was very welcoming to all made it a very enjoyable experience.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues made me feel considerably valued. To begin with, as with any internship, the work that I was doing was purely for my benefit to get my up to speed on the role and the industry. After only a few weeks however, I began to take on jobs that my colleagues would have otherwise had to complete themselves and help out.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very supportive from the start. He set out measurable and attainable objectives and clearly put in place the necessary guidance for me to achieve these. The majority of my support came from other juniors in the team however, who showed me everything to do with the job starting from a very basic level.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was extremely busy. Obviously there were busier days and quieter days, but on the whole I was trying to balance rushing my work and making no mistakes. The day kicks off at 7am and the first hour was often the busiest, but a lot of the workload was semi-self inflicted later on in the evening as time could have been saved if the standard of work was allowed to slip.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It was my responsibility to send out a number of (internal) daily emails, which went on to the high ranking members of the team for use in external emails. The highlight of these was the daily summary which helped me learn a lot about the context of the job. I was also responsible for helping out with other tasks, although all of these had to be checked by another member of the team before they could go out.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have already completed my degree so it will obviously not assist me at all in that respect. With regard to my future career however, I believe the skills I have developed will go an extremely long way towards helping me, both on a day to day basis and should I apply to any other similar jobs.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my team was exceptional, a real feeling that everyone working there was good friends with each other and regular staff events. I was sat with a number of other interns however and although we got on famously, there was apparent tension in the group as we were in competition with one another.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was organised down to a T. It was obvious that it was a tried and tested programme and as such, colleagues were able to offer advice and share their internship experiences. There was a great deal of exposure to the highest members of the bank and many learning sessions to assist our development.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were two days technical training at the start of the internship that was invaluable, and meant that people from a non-finance background were brought up to speed. There was some ongoing training and development, but most of my development from the internship I gleamed from on the job learning from colleagues.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Really appealing, every single one of the interns is keen for a job here, and there is an obvious career progression. From talking to my friends and colleagues, the culture here is also much more desirable than at other similar banks and obviously the financial compensation for the job helps a great deal.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Despite our best efforts, there is not a great deal of time for socialising with other interns outside of work hours just because the work hours themselves are so long. There was the odd Friday when we could go out for a drink but that was about it. I actually socialised more with my team and there were a number of events throughout the summer.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Probably as expensive as it gets.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Loads of bars, but have to go more into town to get clubs

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 5 a-side football came up once, apart from that not really

    2/5
