The Role
I massively enjoyed my placement as I had to the ability to experience the front office of an investment bank first hand. The hours were relatively long as was standard in the industry but because it was so fast paced it not feel like I was in the office for a massive amount of time.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues and they realized I was there for a learning experience. They set up meetings for me with loads of people from different parts of the business and any colleague that you requested time to go and meet was more than happy to help.
Support from the managers was high considering how much work that they have themselves in an investment bank was very high. Generally you would have to go and ask for time but they would be more than happy to give it to you. My manager was great in helping me decided what I want to do with my career.
I was incredibly busy on a daily basis and this occasionally translated into long hours, however I enjoyed the amount of work as it meant you always had something to do and never felt at a lose end in the office. This level of work is standard in an investment bank.
I was allowed to do a large amount of normal work in my internship; this was a really great amount of responsibility. I couldn’t do some parts of the job due to factors such as not being CFA qualified but I did as much work as I could possibly do in reality.
I learnt so many crucial work skills such as working with excel outlook and different systems used within firms. More crucially, I learnt a lot of soft skills such as behavior in business meetings, how to present and how to speak to people in a more formal business atmosphere, which was crucial.
The Company
The atmosphere in the obvious was load which is different to most offices but pretty standard for a trading floor. The people made the experience as good as it was as they always had time for different questions as well as being about to chat about general things such as the start of the new Premier League season.
Organization of the internship was second to none. Constant emails from the campus team felt like they were bugging you but in reality gave you the opportunity to do so many different things and make the most out of the 9 weeks. The chance to meet directors throughout the internship was incredibly valuable.
The company invested so much time in helping us understand the role of an investment bank. I felt like an individual who they were trying to develop unlike at places I had previously been such as PwC where you were more of number. Personal development was aided by constant meetings with my manager.

If I am offered a job, which is common for many interns then it represents a brilliant career opportunity in one of the most competitive industries to get started in. The focus is certainly on providing the firm with a new supply of workers so if you are a good intern then you have a chance of getting a job somewhere in the firm.
The Culture
Social scene among the colleagues was fantastic with a great range of socializing opportunities available. The colleagues were really good about organizing socials to help interns meet the team. The fellow interns were less sociable possibly as they were overly focused on getting a job and seeming like they worked long hours.
Cost of living was high as is standard in London with travel, but the socializing experience was brilliant as the high pay rates allow you to enjoy lots of different activities around London. This was vital in having a great time around London and enjoying myself. London is the best place in the country for bars and clubs.
Nightlife in London is second to none compared to any other area of the country. In comparison with places where some friends have done internships such as Windsor, the nightlife must be exponentially better.
Yeah all sorts of sports were always being offered.
