The Role
Really enjoyed the internship, because everybody was very supportive and even if they were busy themselves they would still help me. Also the team spirit in the team was great. We tried to go for drinks at least once a week, even if it was just for one drink. It was just fun meeting everybody outside of work.
If I made an mistake I would be told, but this also means I valued it even more when they told me they liked my work because they really meant it. The juniors but the seniors as well would send me a personal e-mail saying they appreciated the work I had done on the project and to keep it up. This was really motivating.
Barclays has quite a good mentoring programme with a buddy and a line manager. Though I luckily did not need them in their official roles they were nice people to whom I felt I could always reach out to. Even if my line manager was a senior he made sure I could always ask him any question I wanted and never made me feel dumb or bad about it.
If I would leave before 12 it would be early, leaving past 2AM would start to get late. Two rough weeks of getting in at 9 and leaving at 5-6 in the morning, but was told this was exceptional. All in all I would say not to bad for and IBD, role. Sure it is worse than an general job, but you know this in advance when you sign up for it.
I had a lot of responsibilities as I was allowed to do the model and made a substantial amount of the work that was sent to the client. In the end of the internship (and after proving myself for a lot of times) the products that I made would not be checked anymore and be send to the client directly, which was motivating as I saw it a sign of trust and confidence.
I learned a lot of modeling and gained a lot of financial knowledge in general. Also discussing the financing gave a lot more legal background to the financial world. Both of these things will aid me in my studies Finance and Corporate Law.
The Company
Every body works hard, but they try to be relaxed. Also, everybody works hard to make sure nobody has to come in on the weekend. People will support you if you have had a late night and everybody will do their best to make sure everybody leaves as early as possible.
It was set up quite well. The biggest down-side was perhaps that there were too many mandatory events, that required you to mix your work-time and mandatory event times. You could always reach out to HR if you wanted/needed though.
They company provided a lot of training, both company wide as industry specific. Also the feedback was given twice in 8 week and this made sure you could improve yourself to the fullest. Only upside would be even more feedback sessions.
Company Parties/Events
The future prospects are quite good. An increase in salary and a place within a very good and nice team. Furthermore, the company provides placements in an international setting and people working here for two years have excellent placement opportunities.
The Culture
The coherence between interns was pretty good. We all got along pretty well and went out together almost every weekend. Friendships for life were made here. There are already holiday plans booked.
The cost of living in London is pretty high, but we got paid pretty well so we were still able to live life to the fullest.
Nightlife in London is amazing. Be sure to plan your evening though, because otherwise there might be long lines for the clubs and you need to pay a ton of money to enter.
