    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I found that it was a positive experience and I would definitely recommend the Business Technology scheme. However, I wish I had been given the opportunity to work in the development side of it, and not operations.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I developed a good relationship with the members of my team that were based in the same London building as I was, although I could not say the same about those based in other locations due to lack of interactions. The fact that part of my team would work from home regularly would make me feel quite lonely, but nevertheless they have been extremely kind and supportive despite being extremely busy.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My LM has been extremely supportive from the very beginning and has always ensured that even when she was holiday leave, someone would have been there to look after me and provide me with the support needed. Later this support would have become less as I became more comfortable with the tasks assigned.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was really busy, especially in the mid of my internship. Everyday I would have to work outside of working hours and skip lunch breaks to keep track of the workload assigned. At moments, I would feel way too stressed and overwhelmed.

    1/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The projects I was assigned did not have much responsibility involved per se, but I was asked to speak to senior management regularly which I guess has a certain degree of responsibility involved. One of the project I was assigned was assigned by a member of the leadership team to me via my LM. and will then be used once I terminate my internship.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I now have a great understanding of how an organisation like RBS works and what the main responsibilities in technology are, I have acquired more confidence and I also strongly improved my communication skills. These transferable skills will support me throughout my future career - however the technical knowledge I have gained will not support me directly with my degree course as the two are not in anyway related but will support me with my future career of choice.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Compared to other RBS buildings, slightly better as much less "corporate". I was based in Regents in the yellow area - I was the only intern and there was no graduates so I guess I felt slightly out of place at times. As I said before, I would occasionally feel quite lonely too.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall it was okay I guess - my LM was really organised, the deadlines however could have been spread out more evenly I guess...

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • This is my second internship at RBS (between my first and second year at uni I spent a week in Edinburgh in a "spring-term" internship, where I was given the offer for this summer placement) so I feel like the bank has invested on me.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am aware that the company on making Bristol and Edinburgh the two main centres for Technology within RBS. I would not want to have to move to either location

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Absolutely not. I was based in a building where the was only another intern and I would regularly have to skip most London intern events (e.g. Lunch and Learn sessions) because they were happening in another area of London. The social part of the scheme was definitely not there (for me, at least).

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live in North West London - Hendon, which is not that expensive for London standards. Angel however is really expensive - but the salary was adequate to cover all living costs and social life.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife per se not much, but I much prefer it to other areas in London. If you are into theatre, going to nice pub and parks, and eating out like I am, then it's great! Plus, it's near Shoreditch and Camden so I guess that helps.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I attended a tech conference once which was brilliant, I had to take part to a CSR challenge which helped me to socialise with other interns and the Early Careers Team organised a few events. However, I wish I had been given the opportunity to attend more events and perhaps travel more in mainland UK.
