    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I was able to really get involved in the work my team was doing and felt like I was properly contributing to the efforts of the team. I was able to meet lots of people in different parts of the bank and a different hierachies, which helped me to learn about the bank and to network effectively.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like my colleagues valued my contribution and that I was able to earn their trust through my work so that they felt confident to take me to meet clients and to work directly with clients. As I progressed I was able to do mroe advanced work and more client related work over administrative work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and I had a weekly meeting to discuss my progress and she was able to give me lots of guidance on the job. It was my first time in a corporate environment and she helped me to behave appropriately and to learn and develop the skills needed to progress to more advanced work.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had work to do and was never bored. Sometimes I was very busy and felt swamped. How busy you are is mainly down to you, managing your workload is an important skill of any job and I was always able to ask for more work. It took me a bit longer to feel confident enough to say no to jobs as I was busy but it will take time to develop the relationships with the team.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was not micromanaged during my placement. I was given jobs to do and when I did them they were part of the business and if it went wrong I was responsible. At first I was given less important jobs but by the end I was doing more important jobs and meeting key clients. Although I was responsible I was always able to ask for help from anyone on my team and wasn't isolated.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Important soft skills such as time management, working in a team and learning quickly on the job will be important for my degree and for future jobs. Being able to work with different teams allowed me to build my network broadly which will be useful for future jobs as I will have options across the bank.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was good. It was serious and productive but also able to have a chat and have fun with the team. We often went out together after work and were friends outside the office. There was a lot of flux in the team with people leaving and joining but this didn't damage the atmosphere. There was a lot of experience in my team and they were helpful in teaching me and letting me get involved.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was rather disorganised. I was not given a manager until just before I started and this meant that I did not have access to essential systems to do work so I got off to a slow start. The reviews were poorly organised and not sent out in good time or with good instruction. My manager was well organised and helped me a lot, keeping me busy and helping me to meet people widely but joining the team was difficult.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had some training to do that was useful but mostly I learnt on the job. Most of the information I learnt is specific to my team and isn't directly transferable to other jobs but the skills I learnt and the network I developed will be very useful in the future and encourage me to stay on at the firm.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The firm has a very good reputation and trains their employees well. There is also lots of opportunities to go up the ladder at the firm and one thing they do very well is keeping people within the firm by promoting movement into different parts of the bank. This allows you to get a wide variety of skills and network widely which is good for career advancement and is a key consideration in my choice to stay at the firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene with the other interns. We would go to the wetherspoons and go out on friday nights and would meet up to have lunch together. Meeting and socialising with other interns made the internship a lot of fun and the variety of different roles and backgrounds helped me to expand my experience and to learn about different ways to approach the scheme.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • In London cost of living is very expensive. I go to university in london and already had a place to live but staying for only 9 weeks would be very expensive.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • superb, nightlife in london is great. There is lots of variety.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really many activities other than socialising at weekends.
