The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my Summer Internship with Lloyds Banking Group. I was placed on the RBB Fraud Investigations Team. I got on really well with my team, and enjoyed coming to work everyday. I was given meaningful projects, and by the end of the 10 weeks was treated as a full time employee in terms of the work I was expected to complete.
I felt valued by all my colleagues, when I joined my team they were experiencing high work volumes and I made it clear I wanted to be a help rather than a hindrance over the 10 weeks. My colleagues loved how I volunteered to help out on everything I could.
My manager was very supportive, and helped me when ever I encountered any problems whether they were related to my role within the team, the responsible business challenge, or to the Graduate referral process.
I was very busy. However, there were some days where I would of liked more work. I did volunteer to help out whenever I could but as I was only with the team for 10 weeks there was only so much I could learn.
I was given a lot of responsibility from the offset. I was given 4 projects over the 10 weeks, such as logging fraud cases to Action Fraud so they could be investigated by the police. As well as this I was responsible for reviewing First Party cases, logging suspicious callers, and carrying out PSR Refunds.
My degree is in Philosophy & Ethics. I felt the Fraud Team was the perfect placement for my skillset and I have now chosen to write my dissertation on Fraud and Financial crime.
The Company
The atmosphere was brilliant! Everyone in the office was really welcoming. There were socials every week amongst the other interns and scholars. My team were also very social, with regular trips to the pub and other social activities on a Friday. There was always a good level of banter in the office!
The organisation at the start was not the best, due to being unable to communicate with my line manager before my placement began. However, when I did final manage to get into contact with my line manager the whole placement was well thought out and I was given plenty to do.
Lloyds has an award winning development programme, and an array of learning resources available. My manager continuously encouraged me to make the most of the online courses available to me. I completed 10 courses not including the mandatory training during my placement, and also completed my Professional Banking Qualification.
The employment prospects following the placement are very appealing. If you impress over the 10 weeks you are likely to be referred to the Graduate scheme following the completion of your university studies. The graduate scheme, has many benefits, and aims to prepare you for a leadership role once the 2 year scheme is completed. This is something that appeals to me and which I believe will set me up for a successful, long-term career.
The Culture
The social aspect of the placement was fantastic. There was a group of us that went out almost every weekend to after work drinks, and onto a nightclub. We also had lunch together most days should our schedules allow it.
Birmingham. Cheap as chips. Aldi £22 weekly shop.
The nightlife around the office was great. There was plenty of bars and clubs to choose from as soon as you walked out of the office and on a Friday the oubs and bars were filled from lunch time until the early morning of Saturday.
There wasn't anything provided by or organised by Lloyds.
