The Role
I didn't really enjoy my internship, I came into the scheme with high hopes however the role I was in was not very interesting nor fulfilling. Your role gets randomly (I think) assigned at the start and having more say/preference over the area we were in may have helped.
I felt valued by my colleagues in the fact that I got on with them but I didn't really feel that the work I was set was at a level that contributed significantly to the team. Therefore it was quite hard for them to value me.
My line manager gave me very little support but he effectively passed me onto a delegate manager on the first day. My delegate manager gave me support whenever I asked for it but no one really checked on me or was monitoring my work/how I was getting on.
Not very, I would often complete tasks quite quickly and ask for extra work. However it got to the stage where I was so frequently asking for work that I actually felt like I was annoying the team, which was quite a tricky situation to be in.
My responsibility grew as the internship continued but I was never really given that much.
Obvious email, excel, word skills but nothing that applicable.
The Company
The atmosphere was the best thing about the internship. There's a good culture within Barclays and my team were really friendly. I also liked the fact that people were very happy to meet or catch up over a coffee despite how busy they may have been.
Not very, when I was placed on my desk after my internship my team didn't really have much for me to do and there was little structure in my work. There was however quite a lot of talks from senior members of the bank which gave an insight into the wider opportunities throughout the bank,
Not much, the initial training was quite generic and I didn't receive much feedback during my internship.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
There are a lot of very interesting areas of the bank which I could potentially see myself working in, in the future. I think the scope of the organisation and the ability to move around is one of the attractive aspects of future employment at Barclays.
The Culture
Yeah, most interns went for drinks on Thursday or Friday.
rent was £170 a week, Food/Drink £50 (a lot more if you went out), transport £40 - fairly standard for London.
Decent bars in Canary Wharf, definitely better in the city.
Yeah a fair few citizenship/charity events which you could get involved in.
