The Role
I found my 10 week placement very enjoyable. There was a lot of sturcture to the well organised programme. The internship offered me an opportuntity to get really involved in a major project within the insurance team. Alongside this there were plenty of training activities inculding Excel and Public Speaking (Presenting) workshops. There was also the opportunities to explore the wider frame work of the business by visiting other offices and sites across the country. There was also a structured programme to raise money for charity.
I felt very valued by my colleagues, they were always happy to give me support if I asked for it and I was also treated with a lot of respect during the ten weeks. My views and opinions were always taken serious and into consideration when I offered them.
My manage was superb. He was always happy to answer my questions and would always make time for me if I needed to have a long discussion about a topic. He really checked up on my progress and made sure that I had enough work to do.
For the vast majority of the 10 weeks I was very busy, having enough work to fill a 9 - 5 day. But as you would expect at the start it was a little slow and you could find yourself without much to do. This also happened to an extent nearer the end of the internship as the projects were approaching completion.
A lot. The project I worked on was really valued by the company. Thus I ended up presenting my work to a range of senior people inculding a Director. Throughout the 10 weeks you are basically treated like a fully fledge employee. This is an area where the programme really exceeded.
I developed a wide range of technical skills. I really got involved in learning about Excel, exploring and using a wide array of advanced functions, VBA and macros. I also had the opportunity to learn about Emblem and Radar but that was largely unique to my project. Throughout the 10 weeks I also had the opportunity to develop a lot of soft skills. The main one probably being time management. I had regular deadlines which I needed to meet.
The Company
The office I worked in was quite quiet. People generally just got on with there work and there wasn't too much chatting. Also being quite a remote office most people drove in so there wasn't a huge social scene either.
Very well. There were regular email from the Graduate Recruitment team before the intern started letting us know details. Every intern was also assigned a graduate buddy and another graduate how was on the Talent Board. There were opportunities to get in contact with your line manager before the internship started as well. During the placement we would recieve weekly emails from the graduate team to keep us up to date. Any training or development day was organised very well and went off without any problem. In this programme they also organise accomendation for you. This, again, was done without any issues.
The invested quite a lot. There were Excel training sessions, Public speaking training sessions and a development (fun) day organised. There were also opportunties to visit the wide range of office and site in Centrica
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
They are very good. Centrica offer a very strong graduate programme. They also give you the opportunity to learn a lot about each programme during the placement.
The Culture
Since Centrica organise accomendation for all the interns there is quite a good social scene. It is a bit like halls. But it is really what you make of it.
Its near London. So it is what you would expect.
Not very good. The nearest place to reasonably go out in is Windsor.
There were regular 5 a side football games but apart from that not much really.
