    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Work was engaging, meaningful and I was given responsibility for a couple of both small and bigger tasks. The team was fantastic, very supportive, open and friendly and you did not feel there was any type of hierarchy in the company as you could easily approach a D/MD. Work-life balance was very good, 8:15/8:30 AM - 5:30 PM.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • People were very kind and made you feel part of the team. They were very supportive and would give you acknowledgement every time you did something well. In terms of responsibility I felt like I could have taken on bigger, more complex projects, but I guess for 9 weeks the level I got was pretty fair.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • My manager was a great guy who helped me a lot and would answer every single question I had. Although he was a VP it was more like talking to a friend rather than a boss. He helped me with work, career plans and day to day queries. My extended team was great too and I never felt that people did not have time for me or did not want to help me.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight did not have a strict structure and you would basically decide on when you want to deliver projects or you would discuss with your team and manager and ask when they need your work. HR organised an insight with a MD from different divisions almost every week and you would also have mid-internship reviews and end of internships reviews which helped you to keep on track with your tasks.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Entire floor was very friendly and open and it was great that there were other interns and grads with whom you could interact and find more information from. That helped a lot to make the experience more enjoyable. Could have had more events with other interns so that we can get to know each other more because there were very many of us and it was hard to know more than the people on your floor.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We only had two days of training in the beginning of the internship and I felt that was not enough for the next 8 weeks of work. Throughout the internship the main way in which you could get training was by asking as many questions as possible to everyone and understanding what each divisions does.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • As an intern you cannot be given much responsibility because you will only be there for two months, therefore I would say that I did not get to understand 100% what work would be like in the division. However, if you talked to grads more they would be able to provide you with more information about that and most of them were kind enough to offer to share their experiences.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Pretty much understood that in Barclays people are genuinely very communicative, open and friendly. I know this is something that almost everyone who has done an internship says about their company, but Barclays really do what they say they do. Another aspect is that you receive acknowledgement for your work- at least from my experience in BUK.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • They offer an accommodation allowance and they say they pay for your expenses to and from university/home country to the location you will be working in. However, it took them long to pay me my interview expenses so it might take a while to get the to/from expenses. Salary differs from one division to the other though and it can vary up to 10k.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • We had a couple of events organised with seniors from different divisions but I found it very difficult to meet up with other interns. There were very many of us and that is why I suppose it was hard to get us all together but they could have organised more events for interns because they will be the people you will be in touch the most after you finish this experience. However, if you wanted to meet up with somebody in particular you could do so by sending them an email and they would reply quickly most of the times.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Although we only had a couple of events they were organised fairly well and I enjoyed them.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, I got the chance to actually get involved in one of their volunteering projects for a day.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
