The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with Centrica. I think this was down to the structure of the placement, both within and beyond the role. In my role, I was given the chance to carry out my own projects, which meant I got the chance to approach the tasks in my own way. Outside of the role there were a variety of training and development days, as well as the charity challenge which gave you the choice as to how you wanted to fund raise or volunteer.
From my first day onward the team I was part of always made me feel welcome and valued. They were very easy going which made it easy to settle in and feel comfortable, and I felt like they trusted me with enough responsibility to handle some good projects. The other grads in the office also made the effort to welcome and include me.
My manager always made the effort to check in with me regularly and was always to hand when asked for help. His hands-on approach certainly helped me to get the most out of my time there. The other managers within the team were equally supportive.
Like most jobs this could fluctuate, but for the most part I felt like I was a good level of busy. By this I mean that I usually had a lot to be getting on with, but due to the project-based nature of the work I could usually manage my own time and so wasn't stressed by regular deadlines.
I was trusted with what I felt was a relatively high level of responsibility considering I was only there for 10 weeks. I was given several projects which were almost entirely up to me in terms of how I went about them and how I divided my time between them. It was clear that these projects either were or had the potential to be of use to the business.
This was my first experience of working within a professional business environment, and so has greatly increased my knowledge and therefore confidence about working in this type of role. This will certainly help once I leave university and get a job.
The Company
Much more laid back and easy-going than I expected. Of course, work still got done but it as a pleasant surprise to not feel a huge amount of pressure to always keep a strict professional manner
Very well. The grad team always did a great job of organising the placement as a whole and any induction and training days. Within the role there was a clear structure to your time there, including objectives and reviews to help you keep on track
There were several training and development opportunities over the ten weeks, including an initial induction and training to get you up to speed and to give you a chance to network with the other interns, excel training, presentation training and a development day which encouraged teamwork and socialising - and was a lot of fun

I have enjoyed my role for this internship and so would welcome the chance to continue in this role in the future, but beyond this there are so many opportunities with within Centrica that it almost certain to have a suitable role. The grad scheme allows you to work in three different roles over two years, which is a great opportunity.
The Culture
Centrica actually pay for your accommodation over your internship with them, so very low! I was based in Leicester which I found relatively cheap, but you could be based all over the country with Centrica
The charity challenge provided a great opportunity to get involved with activities outside of work with other interns. You are set a target of £200 per person to raise per person over the placement but you work within teams to achieve this. It's up to you how you go about it so you have a good opportunity to have some fun.
