The Role
I enjoyed my internship a lot; it gave me a real chance to see first hand what an actuarial office is like. It also taught me a lot about pensions and the technical actuarial work behind working as an actuary.
I felt somewhat valued by the junior colleagues as I could rely on them to give me work and explain tasks properly to me. The more senior colleagues were a little indifferent.
I was given a lot of guidance and support by my manager through weekly catchup/feedback sessions.
This varied day to day; somedays were quieter and others extremely busy. On the whole I was able to partake in a large variety of tasks.
I was given some responsiblity during my placement; however as most of my work was low level, this was to be expected.
I developed a vast amount of technical skills, including excel training as well as performing a wide variety of CETV calculatuions. This will aid me greatly in my university studies as I am studying Finance modules. This should also help towards studying for the actuarial exams in the near future.
The Company
The office I worked for had quite a calm, relaxed atmosphere.
Quite well organised: My manager organised quite a few meetings between us as well as socials and introductory sessions. One thing I would say is we had our excel training about 4 weeks in which was quite late as I had already encountered excel before that point so that was not well organised.
Not greatly - I had excel training sessions but that was about it. My buddy did help me out a lot.
I would like to work for AON, I do like the company atmosphere and financial benefits however I probably woudn't choose this office to work in as I find it a bit boring.
The Culture
Only 3 socials were organised in 9 weeks so not really.
It was okay - was outside London but still South East.
I'm not big on nightlife so cant speak much here.
I felt there were more of these opportunities for boys e.g. weekly cricket and football whereas for girls there were rarely any socials after work.
