The Role
Was able to get involved in interesting work and the social side of the company is fantastic. Overall had a really good insight into Actuarial work and has confirmed my decision to pursue a career as an Actuary. Good summer internship programme and have felt I have grown and honed in my skills. Great company and feel valued as an employee.
The other team members were very friendly and approachable and were helpful when you asked questions. Also, the flat structure makes it easier to talk to more senior people. As the social side of the company is so good, it is easy to get to know the team outside of work hours.
There was very good support and guidance as I was assigned a mentor at the start of the internship. My mentor was very friendly and I felt I was able to approach them if I needed help with something. Also was able to ask them in more depth about Actuarial work and the company as a whole.
I felt I had enough to do on a day-to-day basis and did not feel stuck with nothing to do. There were some periods where work was a little slower but generally there was enough to be getting on with. There were no periods were I felt I had too much work to do and I would not be able to complete it all.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during the internship as I was able to get involved in work which was important to the firm. I felt like my work had an impact and was valued by others in the office. However, there were other times when I didn’t get much chance to get involved with client work, so responsibility given varied throughout the internship.
I was able to develop skills in VBA and honed in my Excel skills. These skills will be very useful beyond my studies as these are used extensively in the workplace. Furthermore, training on actuarial techniques and in actuarial software will be highly useful in pursuing a career as an actuary.
