The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my internship at Hymans Robertson. I wanted to spend the summer preparing myself for a technology related career and I felt this could not have been a better introduction to the industry. Not only did I learn so much about working with a technical team, I was also exposed to multiple programming languages, I designed my own front end and back end API for a website and became competent with Power BI, which I was able to apply directly to the businesses operations.
Each and every person I met at Hymans made me feel welcome from the get go. I was continuously involved in team meetings throughout my time there, they each took time out of their days to get to know me throughout the summer and I was never once asked to go on a coffee run (that would be about as far from the Hymans ethos as I could imagine)... so, for an intern I'd say I was very much valued in the office.
Despite not having any technical experience prior to the internship, they were all more than willing to help me wherever they could along the way. My progress was checked up on daily by my mentor and the program was very much tailored to me.
I was kept very busy every day of my internship. Not having any technical background meant that on arrival I was given material to go away and get up to scratch. Although this did mean a few days of independent learning, once up to scratch, I was quickly moved onto various projects that applied these newly learned programming or analytical skills.
I was able to tailor the internship to what I wanted to get out of it, which I felt was responsibility in itself. Although I did not have such a direct responsibility to the effect my time might have had on the company's daily workings, I did have the choice to make of the experience what I wanted. Because of the lack of a programming background, I had the choice to do as much or as little as I wanted. The projects that I then undertook reflected the workload and responsibility that I put on myself.
I am a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate with a keen interest in technology. Although a technology consulting internship will not have any direct help towards my final year at university, the skills I have learned will be incredibly valuable to me when I come to apply for a job in the technology industry after uni.
The Company
On arrival at the internship I was issued a work laptop and everything was very well organised. The projects that I undertook were a little more sporadic because they did not know what I wanted to get out of my time there. This did not seem to matter as I was ale to get on with various online courses while my mentor came up with various projects to allow me apply my new skills.
I was offered all the training tools I could need to learn the programming skills I needed to be able to apply to my project. I was given subscriptions to a variety of training tools and had access to enough tools to allow me to apply my skills in real life scenarios. These learning tools were incredibly valuable to my time at Hymans and I have come away with a good understanding of a variety of languages because of them.
Working from home
Although I have loved my time at Hymans, I am not sure that web development is exactly what I want to go into after university. I thoroughly enjoyed programming and gaining the skills that I have done, however, with the skills I now have, I would like to apply this knowledge to a more business and client facing role within the technology sector.
The Culture
In the Glasgow office there were only a couple of other interns in various other departments so I would say it was fairly quiet in that department.
I lived in Edinburgh in my student flat and commuted ever day to Glasgow. But I would say it would have been a lot cheaper than if I had worked in the London office.
Due to me living in Edinburgh, I did not go out much in Glasgow.
