The Role
The 8 week internship was really enjoyable and challenging. The first two das were spend on induction days with 11 other interns from Barnett Waddingham's other offices. We were given numerous presentations about Barnett Waddingham's different practice areas with some interactive activities to teach us the basics of excel and pensions as well as some fun ice-breakers. Once the internship started, we got stuck into client work right away and I found the tasks varied and interesting. The social scene was a really great bonus, I was able to attend numerous events including a networking 'bar-crawl'!
Everyone was very welcoming and I felt a part of the team straight away. The work I was doing was valued and when I didn't understand something other members of the team were more than happy to take the time to explain things. When I asked questions, it wasn't seen as a nuisance and so it was easy to make sure I was on the right track.
We were assigned a mentor who was a training actuary and a more experiences supervisor. Both of which were happy to help and give advice when I needed it. They were very welcoming and answered any questions I had.
There was a constant and mostly steady work flow. There were times when I was relatively busy and had a few deadlines but it was good to get a taste of what proper working life is like! There was never a time that I was stuck for work because when there was no client work for me to do we had some summer student tasks / projects to get on with. These included three presentations, data checking tasks as well as an on going investigation.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much responsibility I was given. After an initial week of training I was able to get stuck into client work and was able to write draft assumptions and monitoring reports myself.
I now know exactly what an actuary does and have found that it is definitely the field that I want to go into. There was a considerable amount of training that covered a massive range of things, from calculating annuities to the legal requirements that must be met by Barnett Waddingham.
The Company
The office was really friendly and I got on well with everyone, social events were a good way to mix with colleagues.
The internship was well planned and organised.
