The Role
Yes. It was hard in the beginning due to the lack of work, and familiarising myself with the routine, but after a few week, when the work began to pick up more, I enjoyed it more.
My team included me in a lot of their activities and valued my opinion. People that I shadowed also made time for me.
With weekly 121s with my manager/supervisor, she offered me a lot of support and guidance. We would go through what I've done in the previous week, what I liked and disliked and what I should be aiming to the next week/ begin to organise some tasks. This was helpful, as she also gave career advice.
In the beginning, not busy at all, with the first few weeks going by quite slowly, but as worked picked up, I became more busy with tangible work.
Not much responsibility given in the beginning. Given some responsibility with some of my work, with strict deadlines.
They'll assist me in my degree as a lot of the work I did on my internship involved writing reports, which will help me in my essay writing. Using critical analysis and problem solving skills will assist me with coursework and my degree in general e.g. in seminars, as I study Politics and International Studies and that requires a lot of the skills that I've used in my internship, although not a major build/development on these skills.
The Company
My team are quite sociable, but overall, the office is very dull and quiet, with little interaction with other people.
Internship was organised fairly well apart from explaining holidays and the referral process properly. Emerging Talent didn't make it clear to everyone how holiday days work and no one explained about how to input holiday pay claims on Reed/the timesheet. The referral process, how things go and what is required of you was said very late on, like a week before we were supposed to have interviews.
They provided webinars for the interns on development and on the bank, and for their division. I was also included in the teams master classes and workshops. I also had to do mandatory training for my division and all interns had a Professional Bankers Course to complete. This went through the banking industry, regulations and practices etc.
It's appealing with their AGILE/ flexible working and how relaxed the office is. It also has opportunities for stretch and good/quick career progression, especially if you get onto their grad scheme (I've been told). The reputation of the bank also makes it appealing to work here in the future.
The Culture
Other interns and IP's were very sociable, often organising socials after work.
Lived at home, London, so only paid for travel. Cost of socialising is what you would expect living in London.
Normal London nightlife
Only the Intern Charity Challenge that everyone was made apart of, which had the option of organising charity fundraising events outside of work, although not many teams did this and it remained mainly internal.
