The Role
It was challenging but enjoyable to feel like I made a valuable contribution to the company
Everyone was welcoming and always willing to help when asked
Lots of support, and even when they were busy they were happy to provide time to help me if I ever needed it
Some days were very busy, but many people were on holiday during the summer and if they were away then some things couldn't be progressed
I was in charge of putting in a system which was in use in other areas but I had to adapt it for the area I was in, which I thought was a fair amount of responsibility, as people weren't relying on my heavily but my work would help people to do their job more efficiently
I learnt some important skills such as communicating with lots of different people and how to gather information efficiently. Also learning how to perform in a working day and maintain a good working energy throughout the week.
The Company
It is friendly, sometimes a little stressed but never hostile
It was difficult initially to sort out the paperwork for the company employing/paying me, but the placement itself was well structured and my project was clear from the beginning
There was time invested in training me to understand the system that I was working with, and I was given the chance to see different areas and attend multiple events during my placement
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I would definitely consider working for GSK when I graduate as they have a very good graduate scheme, although I wouldn't choose to work in the same area
The Culture
Yes, there were lots of other summer students, and placement students at GSK with me and we had lunch and did other social things
I lived at home, and the socialising is relatively cheap as most people lived in the area or had access to cars. The town is small and inexpensive
The town has some pubs and there is a larger town with some great clubs a half hour drive away. There is also a railway station near which has links to cities such as York and Newcastle
There are lots of sports opportunities such as golf and football clubs, and a few shops. The area is good for walking and hill climbing - very good for people who like outdoor activities.
