The Role
I enjoyed it thoroughly. The accommodation was provided by LBG therefore relocation was no hassle at all. During the internship, you're encouraged to participate in as many events and activities as you wish may it be social or business. The branch I was based in was very casual and friendly. My line manager was very comfortable and accommodating. She ensured I always had some sort of work and wasn't just sitting around doing nothing.
Although the office atmosphere was quite relaxed and casual, everyone was hard at work so it was a little difficult to socialise. I got to know all of my team members throughout the internship and they were all very welcoming. Although one thing to note is the age difference, the mean age in the office would probably be around 35 meaning my colleagues were quite old relative to me.
She made sure I had something to do as soon as the internship started. Throughout the internship, she helped me to find anything I was interested in, even if was not within the same department. She was always available when I needed help, willing to help me out in any way. In addition to this, she always provided me additional resources when I any project was set.
There were some day where I didn't have too much work and there was days where I more work than I could handle. It all comes down to the intern themselves - if you are proactive and look for projects to take on, you're likely to be busy with work. If you avoid taking external responsibility, you're more likely to run of out work.
I was given a project to do by myself. However, the project was not very integral to the business and if it failed, it would not have shut down my department. There was a fair amount of responsibility and independence given to me throughout my placement. It depends of the timing of placement, unfortunately I was unable to be a part of a big group project.
It was more of an insight into how the business works and how the people in the business interact. I did develop a few skills such as administrative skills, networking skills, technical skills. Training was provided internally using an intranet. There were also mandatory training provided to help follow security protocols.
The Company
It was very casual. There were plenty of soft banter. A lot of sweets, chocolates and cakes were brought in by various people to share among the people. Apart from this, everyone seems to be getting on with work without too much procrastination. Although as colleagues are spread all over UK, many people are on their phones talking quite loud.
It was quite well organised. My placement was "take it as you go" sort of placement. I could pick up more project or drop some projects depending on the work load.
They have an intranet where users can enrol in various courses. Personally I found them really helpful as it helped me understand the business better and develop my skills. They also have courses from other departments to enhance your knowledge on other topics from other branches of LBG. In addition, they have a mandatory set of courses to get the intern familiar with the department and the security protocols.
Working from home
Very favourable.
The Culture
Yes, all the interns were offered accommodation. It was essentially a first year of university with a lot of social events going on all the time.
Cost of living would be the same as any other area with a major super market. Cost of a social life on the other hand was above average due to the upcoming festival.
Due to an upcoming festival called the fringe, the social life was amazing. There were social events literally every day. All range of clubs and bars with a range of different genre of music. The clubs ranged from cheap to expensive. The people were very nice however the food shops are closed by the time the clubs are closed which is a little annoying.
Yes, social and volunteering activities were encouraged throughout the placement.
