The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of work on this internship. Working as an investment banking summer analyst requires a wide range of skills, such as technical, numerical and presentation skills. Having the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks, which test each of these skillsets, is extremely rewarding, entertaining and fulfilling.
In the investment banking industry, most tasks that you complete are by nature highly valued by superiors. Nevertheless, work is always carried out in teams, and summer interns are usually supervised by either an analyst or an associate. These colleagues always give valuable feedback and make you feel valued as part of the team.
As mentioned previously, interns at Deutsche Bank work very closely with analysts and associates. Every analyst and associate I have worked with has been more than happy to take time out to answer any questions or uncertainties I had. Understandably, interns must be respectful and aware and make sure they take notes when asking questions so that questions aren’t repeated.
Working as an investment banking summer analyst is highly demanding. One must work long hours, compared to other teams or industries, to complete the work set. However, this is true for all jobs in the industry and Deutsche Bank especially do a great job of protecting interns from being over-worked.
Working in investment banking means that one is required to help out on client facing tasks from day one. This is an extremely high level of responsibility. Furthermore, the more diligently and successfully an intern works the more responsibility they are given with respect to client facing tasks. This is a very intuitive and rewarding framework.
This internship has undoubtedly helped me to develop the skills needed to do well in this industry. This internship provides an accurate representation of what it would be like to work full time as an analyst. However, the skills learnt are mainly relevant with regards to working in the industry as opposed to assisting in degree studies.
The Company
The atmosphere in the London office really is fantastic, and is arguably one of the biggest draws of working at Deutsche Bank. Everyone is very friendly, easily approachable and most seniors (such as Directors and Managing Directors) are more than happy to give advice if they see that you have a strong willingness to listen and learn.
Overall, the internship has ran pretty smoothly. At the beginning of the internship, there were lots of technical / IT problems for many interns. However, the majority of these problems were solved within the first week with the remainder of the problems being solved before the end of the second week. After this there were no other significant issues
Deutsche Bank invest heavily in their interns, and this investment is much appreciated. The firm go above and beyond to invite guest speakers from a variety of different divisions so that interns have a broad understanding of the overall bank. These talks are known as “Hot Topic” events and are usually held on Wednesday evenings.
Company Parties/Events
Deutsche Bank are very transparent with regards to their future outlook in terms of personnel. They are keen to hire many interns and create a tight knit community, which will hopefully stay at Deutsche Bank and progress through the company together. Therefore, despite the past few years of hardship, the future employment prospects look incredible.
The Culture
The social scene among the interns is amazing. Interns from a variety of different teams regularly meet up for lunch and coffee during the week. Furthermore, interns within my team at least, are always there to help one another, and if any intern is burdened with too much work other interns (myself included) are happy to help out.
Nightlife in central London in amazing! As interns, we have met every weekend of the internship to go for drinks and explore London. Different areas of London offer completely different experiences, so there is something for everyone! For, example Shoreditch is the place to be if one likes R&B music whereas Mayfair offers a different, more relaxed atmosphere.
