The Role
I really enjoyed my time at the bank. The structure of the programme gave me a lot of exposure to different representatives of the bank which I found really useful. I was also able to learn a lot from scheduled desk shadowing and training sessions that were organised throughout the internship.
I was always given work to do that contributed value to the team. They were always able to provide me with feedback to help me develop as a member of the team. The work I produced on excel or summaries of talks I attended were often used by members of my team
My Managers scheduled frequent chats throughout my internship to ensure I had enough work to do and also to check on my progress. If I didn't understand something my managers always made time to go through it with me or organise for me to meet someone who would be able to help. HR had also set up an intern advisory board and allocated us mentors.
I was relatively busy throughout the internship. I spent a lot of time meeting with different people and shadowing them to get a feel for what they do on a daily basis, everyone was very willing to help me learn. I also had projects to do throughout my rotations which I would present in my last week, this required me to talk to many people as well as conduct my own research.
I felt like a valued member of the teams I was on. I attended client meetings which enabled me to get a real feel for the nature of the job. I was also asked to write summaries of different events and meetings that I attended which members of the team used frequently. However I was unable to do certain activities that would normally be done in the roles due to regulation.
I have improved my knowledge of the financial markets which will be useful going into my third year of my Economics degree. I have also developed many skills such as communication, time management and organisation. The training I received at the start and throughout the programme has widened my knowledge of the financial institutions and instruments which I hope to base my dissertation around.
The Company
The programme was very well organised. HR communicated to us the arrangements of the programme prior to starting. We were given a schedule on our first week for the rest of the internship. As well as this they organised many events and training sessions and we were invited in advanced. On our first day we were met by our managers and introduced to our teams.
They invested a lot of time into us both formally and informally. Our first week was an organised training week where we were taught basic knowledge to enable us to have a good start to the internship, this was conducted by an external qualified teacher and was very helpful. Also training sessions were organised throughout the programme to help build on this. As well as this, business reps were always willing to spend time with you to help you learn about their line of business and about the different products.

The Culture
The social scene was very good. HR organised many after work events such as BBQ, dinners and drinks events for all the interns to attend, this allowed us to meet with interns from other lines of business and to learn from them. I also went out with other interns most Friday nights.
Yes there were sporting events organised such as Touch rugby. We were also allowed to join some of the networks at the Bank such as LEAD. Also as part of our programme we engaged in an ESG project where we were partnered with charities to come up with innovative ideas to help them reach their goals.
