The Role
I learned a lot of interesting topics, met great people and was motivated every day. At Nomura they encourage teamwork and transparency, and are interested in hearing your views and opinions from the start. In fact, they involved me in high profile deals, and I often worked directly with senior management. It was a challenging and rewarding experience.
My colleagues valued me, and treated me like their peer. I enjoyed the culture in my team, we all fitted well together: we would work long hours, but also hang out in the evenings when possible. Most juniors and seniors were available, resourceful and helpful whenever I needed explanations or mentoring.
Management and supervisors were generally hands on with juniors, transparent and kind. They provided me support and advice throughout the internship and exposed me to clients as much as possible. They gave me tasks which were sometimes tough and out of my but they were always available to answer questions and guide me.
Usually I was always busy, either because of live deals or pitching. However, the work was different every time: no two days were the same, so I was excited and curios to learn more about the roles in Investment Banking. Every day I learned new industry topics and technical knowledge.
I had a lot of responsibility: they involved me in important live deals immediately and made me participate in internal strategy sessions, client calls and meetings, after which I had to express my view and deliver related work. I also worked directly with my managing directors and executive directors, which is uncommon for interns at other banks.
The skills I developed and the people I met in this internship truly enriched me culturally and socially. These 10 weeks helped me understand what work I truly enjoy, my strengths and development areas, and my long-term goals. Going forward, I am sure that this great experience at Nomura will assist me in my career and personal learning.
The Company
It was busy and exciting most of the times. Sometimes the work flow would get very intense, but that helped to push me and learn even more in a short amount of time. The team was overall positive and willing to help when the atmosphere would get stressful or tense.
The internship was overall well organised, however sometimes the amount of work could have been split better among interns in the same team, to avoid people being overstaffed and others understaffed. Moreover, HR could have coordinated better with business representatives when to schedule intern events and challenges, as work has to be prioritized.
The firm invested quite a lot in me, considering how useful the first week of training was and how much the team involved me in their everyday work. I just wish we had more mentoring and senior speakers’ events, as it helps juniors to see the bigger picture and long-term goals.

The organisation generally made a good impression on me and I felt that I fitted well with the team and firm culture. Hence, I would love to return to work at Nomura as a full-time employee. Being a smaller bank, it allows earlier work responsibilities, networking opportunities and client exposure.
The Culture
Yes, all summer interns got along well, and I met great people who I will stay in contact with in the long term. I also got along well with most of my colleagues, so sometimes we hang out together in and outside the office. Nomura generally has a fun and social corporate culture.
The area of the City of London is usually not cheap for living and socialising, however Nomura guided us earlier on recommending where it is convenient and good to live and socialise over the summer. The canteens, cafes and bars in or around the office were generally good and affordable.
The nightlife was quite buzzling, as the bars and restaurants by the Thames and London Bridge attract different types of people. I truly enjoyed the area where Nomura is located: it offers a good work and live balance, the view is beautiful and the nightlife is easily accessible whenever possible.
Unfortunately, activities outside of work were not frequent, because we were quite busy and understaffed over the summer. However, when we engaged in activities outside of work, it was always good fun, whether it was company drinks, dinners, intern events or lunch breaks. People were usually up for external activities.
