The Role
I enjoyed the internship very much, I was given a wide variety of work, and feel as if I genuinely contributed to the projects that I did work on. There was a good work- life balance, with members of my team also inviting me to many social events outside of work.
I felt extremely valued by my team during my time at Savills. As the placement went on, and I learned and developed existing skills I was given more work and trust. This was of course a meritocracy, after I had contributed some genuinely useful work, my team were grateful and would trust me with more autonomy to complete tasks.
I was given thorough support by my team. They were extremely understanding of the fact that I had not studied Real Estate at university. However there was a good balance between autonomy, as I have always found that the best way to learn is to thrown into the deep end with projects.
July-August is typically quiet season for Real Estate. However, this was not necessarily a bad thing, as it allowed Graduates and other Surveyors enough time to thoroughly explain how to complete tasks etc. I was also given a background project to complete and hand in at the end of the placement, as well as being invited to site visits and shadow meetings, which helped break the day up and ensure I was a comfortably busy.
As mentioned earlier the amount of responsibility I was given increased as the placement went on. Responsibility will of course be limited as an intern, especially one that hasn’t studied Real Estate, but as the quality of the work I produced and I essentially proved myself, this responsibility increased. By the end I was given the responsibility to produced client reports and phone agents/clients on behalf of the team.
By the time I started the placement I had already finished my undergraduate degree. However if I choose to study a Real Estate masters, the technical knowledge I have gained will of course be invaluable. Importantly I believe the important skill that I gained was phone manner when talking to clients, which is transferrable to all industries.
The Company
There was a good atmosphere, with a generally good work / life balance. Team members set a good example by clearly working hard, however Real Estate is of course a notoriously social industry, the atmosphere was not particularly corporate and it was easy to settle in and feel comfortable within a few days.
The work placement was very well organised, with enough flexibility to allow me to be complete ad hoc work for other members of my team and attend various meetings/lunches that I was invited to. I believe this is a good reflection of working in the industry, as you will be out of the office frequently and no two days are exactly the same.
Prospects of working for Savills are extremely appealing. On completion of the placement, all interns are encouraged to apply to the grad scheme. All of the grads that I have spoken to in the office have extremely positive things to say about working here, and it is easy to gauge that the grad scheme is extremely well respected.

The Culture
There were many opportunities, both professional and social outside of work. At the end of my first week, I was invite to play for the office football team at a big tournament where many property firms i.e., architecture firms, developers, planners and surveyors entered. I was also invited to client lunches, which provided the opportunity to expand my own professional network.
