The Role
It was very enjoyable. The work was diverse and provided me with many extremely beneficial learning opportunities. We were put in accommodation at Royal Holloway University and this contributed to the enjoyment as there was a great team atmosphere amongst the interns as we were all in the same boat. I was very motivated to go to work in the morning.
It was very easy to settle in as the team atmosphere was clear from the start. Outside my team, everyone I met was very happy to meet up for a coffee to tell me about their experiences at Centrica and this was a great way to learn more about the company. I did not feel at all like I was treated any differently than a full time member of the company.
My manager was brilliant in helping me settle into the team, and also guiding me through my work. He was always happy to help, but also wanted me to learn as much as possible so let me work independently when I was moving down the right paths. Other people in the team were also very happy to give me advice and guidance.
Personally I had my own project which I could do constantly. Once I had completed this I was given more work, so I was always busy, and if I had a lull in work, I simply had to ask and someone would find something for me. I never felt like the workload was unfair however.
My project has had a tangible impact in the team I worked in, so I felt good about the level of responsibility. The other tasks given to me were similar to what the graduate would have to do, so this was also important and contributed, so I think overall I was happy with this.
I have learned a lot about the wider company and this will help me significantly in a business report I have to write. My dissertation will also benefit due to the development of my analytical skills. My general understanding of accounting will help me in these modules next year.
The Company
Serious a lot of the time but my team was chatty and would always be happy to have a conversation or the occasional joke.
Having accommodation was great, we had to find our way to office in the mornings but other than that it was great.
I was given a lot of time, we had our own work laptops and phones to make us get the most of the internship.
Company Parties/Events
I would like to work there on the graduate scheme, the training has been very beneficial and it is a great industry to be in.
The Culture
Expensive to go out for drinks but due to the free accommodation it is not that bad.
We had to travel a little while to go out but not too far.
