    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at Citi and learnt a lot throughout. The people who work there really do encourage you to succeed and are willing to teach you the skills you need to have a successful career in the industry. There were a variety of networking events throughout which allowed you to meet people from all areas of the bank and it was altogether an unforgettable experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by colleagues. We were given a lot of important tasks which helped us to learn a lot in a very short space of time. There were opportunities to prove yourself through work, and shadow other areas of the bank – which shows how much time colleagues are willing to spend nurturing and showing interns the ropes. Everyone was so lovely and easy to get on with, which made the whole experience enjoyable.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was a lot of support throughout, especially by our direct managers. We were given mid-rotation feedback and meetings to discuss how well we are doing and points to improve upon for the following weeks. Management was also incredibly supportive, and surprisingly very approachable. I was able to have one-to-one catch ups with senior management, who provided fantastic guidance and advice.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This really depends on the desks you are rotating on as it differed for my two desks. I was very busy on my second desk but I thrived on the challenge and learnt more than I ever thought I would. I was given lots of ad-hoc tasks which were great as I was involved in many tasks with different colleagues and their respective clients. It kept the day interesting and busy and learnt so much!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a significant amount of responsibility, with some projects that I worked on being real value-add to the business. I was given a project from day one on both desks, and many of the tasks and market colour sent to very important clients. It was very meritocratic in the sense that the more you prove yourself by producing great quality work, the more responsibility you are then given thereafter. It really motivated me to work even harder throughout!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed so many skills during my time at Citi. From time management and prioritizing multiple tasks and competing deadlines, to improving my presentation skills every week with the trading game and desk presentations, to extending my markets and commercial knowledge. These are key skills I will definitely use into the near future and beyond, particularly the interpersonal and technical skills you develop significantly on the job.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a very friendly and open atmosphere. I felt welcome and integrated from day one and you were encouraged to reach out to as many people as possible, from desk shadowing, to grabbing coffees with people from other teams that you are interested in learning more about, to getting advice and feedback from recent graduates. Everyone was so approachable and interested to help you grow and succeed. It is a place of work where of course the work is intense but we are all passionate and love what we do and it shows.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The actual structure of the internship was brilliant. It was 10 weeks in total, with the first week of training involving meeting every area of the business, panel discussions and presentations. There was also Bloomberg training, group exercises and fun team building games, and just brought all of the interns together and made us very excited to hit the desk on week 2. Then we have two rotations: the first is 4 weeks and the second is 5 weeks. We also have a trading game throughout where we are in groups of interns competing to be the best ‘fund’ and manage a trading portfolio, and present each week on how the fund is doing. This was so much fun to do! Throughout there were networking events set up for us, shadowing was encouraged, and a lot of chances to meet people from other areas of the bank.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm heavily invested in training and development. As I've mentioned, we were given constant feedback week to week, lots of materials to read up and learn from, and people were very willing to sit down with you and explain specific terms and aspects of their job. There were lots of learning sessions held to teach you about other areas and asset classes which was fantastic that people gave up their time to help us make a more informed decision of where we would best fit within the bank.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Absolutely. We went out as an intern class every single weekend, not just in canary wharf but nights out to central London. There were also many networking after-work events with colleagues that were a lot of fun!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Relatively expensive - but then again it is in Canary Wharf and London, and you earn enough during the internship to enjoy yourself, so its not a worry!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London was pretty great for a night out! We went to so many different places and had a lot of fun.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of opportunities to get involved with different clubs and sports events, charity events and performances. It was great to get involved during the time here.
