The Role
Most of the work you are doing is rocket science but I got the change during my internship to work on a live deal, pitches and full operating models. Given my pretty diversified work I enjoyed most of the work I was doing.
Not everybody gives as many compliments within the bank. overall I felt appreciated by my colleagues.
Every intern has a buddy (analyst) who is given you guidance throughout you internship. Besides this there will be a senior banker who is your mentor. Therefore you have two people in the firm the talk to about work of career. Also the summer months are not the busiest months in a bank and therefore people had quite a lot of time to explain things.
The workload differs so much per day. You can have a morning in which you do basically nothing and then have an afternoon en evening full of work. Overall the workload was fine but not that much.
I worked very close with an ED in the team. There was no analyst or associate checking my work before he received this. Therefore I had quite a lot of responsibility because he expected great work from my side.
IB can me be done with any kind of background. You will start with a week of training to catch up on the basic finance principles. As long as you are smart and eager to learn you can do the job
The Company
The Nomura office is great. it is not located at Canary Warf but more central. The atmosphere changes when seniors leave which makes sense. Overall I felt very comfortable here.
Very well organised. We received a stream of emails before starting and Nomura organised a placement fair. During the fair all incoming interns came to London to meet the teams. After the fair we had the opportunity to hand in our preference.
There was a lot of training in the first weeks and I felt Nomura invested quite a lot in the interns. Also during my internships colleagues invested their time to teach me things.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
You get convinced to work here because most people try to get an offer during their summer internship.
The Culture
Everyone was very open and friendly. There was of course also some competition because many people intend to get a job offer but that didn't affect our relationships.
The cost of living in London is extremely high. Your rent is easily £1000 a month and also groceries etc. are quite expensive.
There is some nightlife and bars. Especially at Nomura everybody goes to the Oyster Shed at Friday which is a nice bar.
In IBD you work many hours. Don't expect to do too many activities.
